Effect of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Stainless Steel 316L Coatings Produced by Cold Spray for Biomedical Applications

Abstract: In this study, the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cold sprayed stainless steel 316L coatings using N 2 and He as propellant gases were investigated. Powder and coating characterizations, including coating microhardness, coating porosity, and XRD phase analysis were performed. It was found that heat treatment reduced porosity, improved inter-particle bonding, and increased ductility. XRD results confirmed that no phase transformation occurred during deposition. “…The specific build-up mechanisms of cold spraying, which usually imparts a high degree of work hardening to the powder particles (Ref 5) and post-deposition residual stresses (Ref 6,7), can lead to low-ductility coatings. Post-deposition heat treatments have been shown to improve the properties (Ref 8,9,10,11).…”

“…The existence of residual stress and work hardening in cold-sprayed coating decreases its mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Some researches about the improvement of cold-sprayed coating via heat treatment were reported [14,15,[20][21][22][23][24]. Heat treatment can effectively change the microstructure of cold-sprayed Cu [14,15,20], Al [21], stainless steel coatings [22,23] and Inconel 718 [24].…”
