Effect of growth regulators and dormancy-breaking chemicals on bud break and yield of ‘Palomino’ grape vines

Abstract: Various growth regulators and dormancy-breaking chemicals were applied to cane-pruned grape vines (Vilis vinifera L. cv. 'Palomino') in an attempt to increase bud break, fruitful shoots, and yield. Application of morphactin to young terminal shoots increased subsequent bud break but significantly reduced yield. Similar treatments with 6-benzylaminopurine and 2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride had no effect on bud break or yield. In one year, thiourea (1-5%) applied 5.5 weeks before anticipated bud break i… Show more

“…In addition to breaking seed dormancy the thiourea can also break the bud dormancy in several fruit tree species (Table 1). Hopping (1977) reported that, amongst other chemicals, thiourea solution (2-5%) applied five weeks prior to expected bud break enhanced the bud break (7-11%) and fruitful shoot (5-8%) in grape vines (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Palomino).…”

“…Thioureas are compounds with high concentrations of nitrogen and sulfur that produce some advances in endodormancy release in grapevine. This effect is even greater when high concentrations of thioureas are used ( Hopping, 1977 ). Another two agrochemicals, DROPP ® and Sitofex ® , are phenylurea-derivatives, mixed with different cytokinins like thidiazuron and forchlorfenuron, respectively.…”

“…They usually consist of high concentrations of nitrogen from distinct sources ( Table 1 ). However, other agrochemicals with different bases have been tested, obtaining different results in terms of endodormancy release, and flowering advance ( Hopping, 1977 ; Erez et al, 2008 ; Botelho et al, 2016 ; Bound and Miller, 2016 ).…”
