Effect of growth rate on microstructure evolution in directionally solidified Ti–47Al alloy

Abstract: The microstructures and morphologies of directionally solidified Ti-47Al alloys with different growth rates ranging from 1 to 200 μm/s were investigated using the Bridgman directionally solidified method. The results showed that numerous columnar grains were formed along the growth direction with the onset of directional solidification. With a variation in the growth rate, the solid/liquid interface changed from a flat to cellular and to dendritic interface. The flat-to-cellular interface transition rate of th… Show more

“…The angles increased with the increase in growth rates. When the growth rate increased to 16.67 μm/s, Liu et al [44] believed that the growth rate of Ti-47Al could be directly controlled without using seed crystals. When the growth rate was 10 µm/s, the angle between lamellar orientation and growth direction was 45 • , while the angle was 0 • at a growth rate of 3 or 20 µm/s.…”
