Effect of Graphitization on the Wettability and Electrical Conductivity of CVD-Carbon Nanotubes and Films

Abstract: The use of carbon nanomaterials in various applications requires precise control of their surface and bulk properties. In this paper, we present a strategy for modifying the surface chemistry, wettability, and electrical conductivity of carbon tubes and films through annealing in a vacuum. Experiments were conducted with 60-300 nm nanotubes (nanopipes), produced by noncatalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in a porous alumina template, and with thin films deposited by the same technique on a glassy carbon s… Show more

“…4. The positive correlation trend between the sp 2 /sp 3 ratio and annealed temperature is similar to the report by Diaz, Franta and Mattia et al 9,29,32) For contact angle measurement, water has stronger polar component than its disperse component, i.e. the polar/disperse ratio is 2.62 (52.2/19.9) for de-ionized water and is 5.07 (60.3/11.9) for pure water.…”

“…For example, the 670 and 2000°C tubes had, respectively, contact angles of 44°a nd 77°with water. 15,16 The tubes had a nominal diameter of 200-300 nm and a wall thickness of about 15 nm. The actual diameters of the tubes varied and were measured with a scanning electron microscope ͑SEM͒.…”
