Effect of Grape Seed Extract Solution on the Microhardness of the Root Canal Dentin: An in Vitro Study

Abstract: Objective: Grape seed extract (GSE) containing proanthocyanidin as a root canal irrigation solution has its antibacterial effects and ability to eliminatethe smear layer. In addition, proanthocyanidin acts as a cross-linking agent of collagen, which adds to dentin’s mechanical properties. This studyanalyzed the effect of GSE containing 2.9% proanthocyanidin on the microhardness of the dentin in the root canal. Methods: Fifty teeth were divided into three groups and immersed in GSE solution, 3% NaOCl solution, o… Show more

“…The material employed in this study was WMTA, which is made up of 80% Portland cement and 20% calcium sulfate-free bismuth oxide to reduce setting time [7]. GSE was also used as it showed promising results when used as an endodontic irrigant and before the application of composite [9], [10], [11], [12]. Subsequently, the present study investigated a new dental material (combination of WMTA and GSE) that combines WMTA biocompatibility with acceptable setting time, handling characteristics, chemical properties, and antioxidant capabilities of GSE, and compared it to each of its components independently.…”

“…Recent research used GSE as an endodontic irrigant due to its antimicrobial action and it was comparable to 2% chlorhexidine gel [11]. Interestingly, GSE maintained the dentin microhardness [12].…”

“…The material employed in this study was white MTA (WMTA),which is made up of 80% Portland cement and 20% calcium sulfate-free bismuth oxide to reduce setting time [7]. “…PA is responsible for cross-linking of the collagen molecules within the dentin by increasing the number of intra- and inter-molecular collagen cross-links, hence reinforcing the collagen matrix of dentin and enhancing the constancy of the collagen by avoiding enzymatic degradation and forming more sTable collagen. Hence, maintaining the mineral constituent for improved microhardness and bond strength to dentin ( 9 ). While there are a lot of research assessing the consequences of NaOCl and EDTA irrigation on coronal dentin bond strength, the literature that discuss the outcome of HEDP irrigation on coronal dentin bond strength are quite limited and the effect of HEDP on composite resin’s bond strength to dentin needs more research.…”
