The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of a phytogenic mixture in the diet on broiler production. A total of 400 day-old unsexed Cobb broiler chicks were randomly allotted to four treatment groups of 10 replications in a randomised design experiment. The phytogenic feed mixture (BMC) contained equal ratios of black cumin, Moringa oleifera and chicory seeds. The treatment groups were as follows: T1 was fed the basal diet, while T2, T3 and T4 were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.2%, 0.4% or 0.6% of three BMC mixture, respectively. Results showed that increasing the dietary BMC level could be associated with a gradual but significant increase in body weight and improvement in the feed conversion ratio when compared with the control group. Broiler diets enriched with 0.4% to 0.6% of the BMC mixture reduced gut microbial count of coliforms, E. coli and C. perfringens as well as gut pH, compared to the control group. Increasing the dietary BMC mixture level was associated with gradual but significant decrease in serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein concentrations and liver enzymes concentrations. However, there was an increase in the high density lipoprotein concentration, and glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity in serum. In conclusion, the BMC mixture could be deemed an effective growth promoter, but further research is needed to evaluate it as a viable alternative to antibiotics.

Simple SummaryAfter the ban on antibiotics as growth promoters in poultry and animal diets, nutritionists had to find safe and efficient alternatives. Because of their beneficial properties, the oils of red and black pepper were chosen to be supplemented to rabbit diets. Promising results were obtained with regard to the ability of these oils to improve rabbits’ growth performance, immunity, and antioxidant status.AbstractThe present study aimed to examine the impacts of the supplementation of red or black pepper oils to rabbit diet as growth promoters on New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits. One hundred and forty weaned NZW rabbits were divided randomly into seven groups in a completely randomized experiment using different quantities of red pepper oil (RPO; 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 g/kg diet) or black pepper oil (BPO; 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 g/kg diet), in addition to the control group. Compared to the control, values of live body weight (LBW) for rabbits fed either RPO or BPO enriched diets were greater. The concentrations of serum triglycerides and cholesterol were lower (p < 0.01) in the RPO- and BPO-treated groups than in the control. Immunity parameters and antioxidant indices were improved in treated groups in comparison to the control. Dietary RPO or BPO can affect some growth traits, improve immunity parameters and the antioxidant activity, and decrease the lipid profile and lipid peroxidation. The use of 0.5 g RPO/kg diet as a dietary supplement had a larger effect on growth parameters than the other treatment groups.

Abstract:To use effectively waste green vegetable soyabean (edamame) and to improve the dressed carcass meat in black-boned chickens (Fah Luang chicken, Gallus gallus), fermented edamame meal was fed to blackboned chickens from 4 to 16 weeks of age. At 4 weeks of age, 20 birds (10 male and 10 female birds) were used to measure the initial weights of dressed carcass meat and each bone part. Another 60 birds were divided into 2 groups with 3 replicates of 10 chickens (5 male and 5 female birds) each. The control group received a basal formula diet only and the experimental group was fed 40 g fermented edamame meal per bird for a period of 30 min before being fed the basal formula diet. The weights of whole body, each dressed carcass muscle part and each bone part increased in the chickens fed fermented edamame meal (p<0.05). The feed cost per Kg body weight gain decreased (p<0.05). Income over feed cost per Kg body weight gain, as well as income over feed cost and strain per bird, increased in the fermented edamame meal group (p<0.05). These facts suggest that the feeding of fermented edamame meal to black-boned chicken induces the chicken's production due to increase of dressed carcass muscle, cheap feed cost (USD/Kg body weight gain) and high income (USD/bird), suggesting the potential for commercialization of waste edamame meal as a feed ingredient for black-boned chickens.
