The need to reduce cost of production of meat animal has necessitated the use of plant materials with medicinal properties as feed additives capable of minimizing the influence of pathogenic microbes and improving performance of the animal. This study investigated the effect of such medicinal plant materials Garcinia kola on the growth performance and the haematological parameters of 20 weeks old rabbits. Thirty six rabbits of mixed breed and mixed sexed were used for the experiment, which lasted for eight weeks (56 days). The rabbits were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments: T 1 with no (0%), T 2 (2.5%), T 3 (5%) and T 4 (7.5%) of G. kola inclusion. The rabbits were housed in 2m × 1m × 1m cages per three rabbits in a 4 × 3 CRD experimental design whereby each treatment had three replicates, with each replicate having 4 rabbits and each treatment comprised 12 rabbits. During the eight week period of the experiment, feed and water were given ad libtum and while similar managerial and sanitary measures were applied for all the animals. Daily feed intake and growth performance of animals in each unit were monitored. At the beginning and the end of the experiment, blood samples were collected from the ear and analyzed for haematological parameters Hb, PCV, RBC, WBC and Plasma proteins). The result showed that G. kola has significant effect on the feed intake, growth rate, haemoglobin, PCV, RBC, WBC and Plasma protein. The feed intake decreased in all rabbits on G. kola treated feeds; numerical values obtained were 332 ± 0.32, 285 ± 0.52, 288 ± 0.12 and 262 ± 0.33 g/week for treatment 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. Weight depression was also observed similarly in all the rabbits on Garcinia treated feeds with T2 having weight loss of 0.36 ± 0.11, T30.35 ± 0.12 and T4 0.64 ± 0.10kg. Rabbits on Garcinia treated feeds also have lower Hb, PCV, Plasma proteins and higher WBC and RBC compared to the initial values showing G. kola. G. kola appear to contain substances which depress feed intake and growth performance and the effect seem to increase with higher concentration. However, the RBC and WBC increased, it is therefore recommended that the use of G. kola should be at low levels of inclusion or intermittently not continuous.Key words: Garcinia kola, growth performance, rabbits. Garcinia kola is a known herbal plant which is widely consumed for many ethnomedicinal uses. This study was aimed at determining the effect of ethanol extract of G. kola seeds on levels of hematological as well as blood indices of liver (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, and albumin) and kidney function (creatinine and urea). Extract (50, 100, 200 or 300 mg/kg) was orally administered to different groups of rats (n = 6) daily for thirty days. Control animals were given vehicle (DMSO + distilled water, 2:1). Blood levels of the parameters mentioned above were measured at the end of extract treatment. Livers and kidneys of animals were removed and weighed and organ-to-body weight ratio was obtained. Extract had no effect on serum levels of liver and kidney indices, except that it reduced (P<0.05) ALP level at 300 mg/kg. Organ-to-body weight ratio of liver and kidney were not affected by extract. Furthermore, the extract increased (P<0.001) platelet count, but had no effect on RBC and its indices (mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin, and mean cell haemoglobin concentration), Hb and PCV compared to control. It also caused reduction (P<0.001) in WBC and neutrophil counts, while lymphocyte was increased. The result suggests that G. kola seed may have no adverse influence on hematologic, hepatic or renal system, and may additionally have hepato-protective property, and enhance blood clotting and lymphocyte function.

Roselle calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa L) is widely used as an antioxidant, antihepatotoxic, diuretic, anti-cholesterol, and immunostimulant. Roselle contains anthocyanin and quercetin that have antioxidant activity. This study aimed to determine the effects of the ethanolic extract of roselle calyx on hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes in healthy volunteers during the 30-day administration and 15 days after it ceased. This study employed pre-and post-treatment design on 21 healthy volunteers, comprising 11 males and 10 females who fulfilled the inclusion criteria and filled out the informed consent form willingly. Volunteers were provided with roselle capsules for 30 days with a dosage of 500 mg a day taken 10-15 minutes after dinner. The hematologic examination was performed on Day 0, 31, and 45, including the measurement of hematocrit, platelet, and erythrocyte levels using a hematology analyzer. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS with paired t-test and Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes of all male and female volunteers on Day 0, 31, and 45 were within the normal range. The comparison analysis affirmed that there was no significant difference between these three parameters from Day 0 to 31, Day 31 to 45, and Day 0 to 45 (p>0.05). As a conclusion, the administration of the ethanolic extract of roselle calyx with a dosage of one 500mg capsule per day for 30 days did not affect the hematocrit, platelets, and erythrocytes in healthy volunteers. There was also no delayed effect on these three hematological parameters 15 days after the administration stopped.
