“…The physicochemical properties of the UV-irradiated surface were found to remain unchanged with regard to the suppression of DEHP elution following the sterilization methods used in this study. The DEHP present in PVC products has been reported to partially convert into MEHP by sterilization with gamma irradiation, 26 and hence, the quantity of MEHP eluted from a control PVC sheet after gamma-ray sterilization was slightly increased in comparison with that of sheets sterilized by autoclave, EO gas, and H 2 O 2 gas plasma. Following gamma-ray sterilization, however, the amount of MEHP eluted from a PVC sheet treated under condition 3 was half that of the control PVC sheet, indicating that the surface structure of the UV-irradiated side was not destroyed and the release of MEHP from the side was effectively suppressed even after gamma-ray sterilization.…”

“…Different chemical oxidation methods for degrading diclofenac have recently been described, such as Fenton reactions, sonolysis in the presence of catalysts, ultrasound in the presence of photocatalysts, and UV-light irradiation in the presence of H 2 O 2 or ozone (Ravina et al 2002;Huber et al 2003;Vogna et al 2004;Leónidas et al 2005;Pérez-Estrada et al 2005;Hartmann et al 2008;Vincenzo et al 2009;Madhavan et al 2010;Güyer and Ince 2011). As an AOP, gamma ray irradiation is an effective way for degrading organic compounds due to its high penetrating power and the isothermal character (Yamazaki et al 1983;Kimura et al 2006;Zhang et al 2008b;Ito et al 2009;Choi et al 2010). By exposure to gamma rays, radiolysis initially occurs to produce some reactive primary species such as hydroxyl radicals, hydrogen atoms, hydrated electrons, and hydrogen ions, which are responsible for the degradation of the pollutants.…”

“…The average molecular weights determined by GPC were M W = 112,000 g/mol and M N = 48,000 g/mol. The tacticity measured by 13 C-NMR was syndio = 30.6%, hetero = 49.8% and iso = 19.6%.…”

“…Many different strategies [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] have been proposed to solve this migration problem, one of them being the covalent binding of the plasticizer to the PVC chains [16][17][18][19][20]. This binding reaction can be carried out by simple nucleophilic substitution of the chlorine atoms.…”
