Effect of fungicides on seed quality of lentil (Lens culinaris L.) during storage

Abstract: Laboratory tests were carried out to study the effect of different fungicides i.e. Bavistin DF, Vitavax and Genuine 50WP on the seed quality of lentil during storage condition. After processing and drying, seeds were preserved separately with three fungicides at the rate of 2.5g kg -1 of seeds and stored in earthen pots till next planting time. The seed quality i.e. moisture content (%), germination rate (%), dry weight (g) of seedlings and vigour index were measured at the end of storage period. The average g… Show more

“…A positive effect of fungicides on germination and root growth has also been observed in chickpea, maize, peanuts (Dhanamanjuri et al, 2013;El-Deeb et al, 2002). The effect of fungicides on the quality of lentil seeds during storage was also investigated previously (Khatun et al, 2016). Fungicide treated seeds demonstrate higher germination and seedling vigor than untreated seeds.…”

“…Usually, pesticide efficacy depends on the types of applied chemicals, application timing, seeding rates, crop cultivars, and environmental conditions [13,14]. Improper fungicide or herbicide usage can negatively impact lentil yield, milling quality, seed vigor, and unacceptable chemical residues in the seed [15,23,24]. In this study, we did not detect any significant interactions between fungicide or herbicide applications, and land rolling or stubble management, under all tested site-year conditions.…”

“…9,10 To restrict fungal infection, different groups of chemical fungicides are extensively applied onto stored pulses and among them benzimidazole and carboxin classes are pioneer. 11 Majority of the chemical fungicides are documented to have a notorious effect on all forms of life. A study on different animal models attested that oral administration in adequate quantity of different chemical fungicides may lead to skeletal malformation, increased mortality, limb malformation, postnatal behavior alteration, postural reflex, decreased testicular weight, histopathological changes, and many other effects on normal reproductive and developmental processes due to their bioaccumulation.…”

“…fumigatus, A. niger, Drechslera tetramera, Fusarium moniliforme, Rhizopus stolonifer, and so on are the common seeds-borne fungi that infect the seed of black gram. Aspergillus is the foremost predominant fungal genera related to the infection to the stored pulses. , To infect pulses, fungal pathogens initially attack the plant cell wall and subsequently deteriorate the internal hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, and starch residues by secreting various hydrolytic enzymes like cellulase, hemicellulase, and amylase. , To restrict fungal infection, different groups of chemical fungicides are extensively applied onto stored pulses and among them benzimidazole and carboxin classes are pioneer .
