Effect of Functional Groups of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Protein Adsorption and Initial Cell Adhesion

Abstract: Surface modification plays a vital role in regulating protein adsorption and subsequently cell adhesion. In the present work, we prepared nanoscaled modified surfaces using silanization and characterized them using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle (WCA), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Five different (amine, octyl, mixed, hybrid, and COOH) surfaces were prepared based on their functionality and varying wettability and their effect on protein adsorption and initial cell adh… Show more

“…A comparison of BSA adsorption data on a-PLL/Alg and n-PLL/Alg indicates that there is a smaller decrease in the α-helix component when adsorbed on a-PLL/Alg than on n-PLL/Alg. This agrees with similar observations by others [45] that better cell adhesion characteristics are obtained for surfaces with a relatively high α-helix component of serum proteins.…”

“…Hydrophilic surface treatments such as plasma treatment enhance the adhesion of BSA, vascular endothelial cells, and rBMMSCs. In cell-substance interactions, protein adsorption is one of the first events to occur between the implant material and the body when the implant is processed during implantation [ 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. These results indicate that changes in surface structure are linked with initial adhesion and proliferation of various cells.…”

“…Hence, we envisage that similar forced injection method in large-scale may be feasible by having hydrophobic surface modification. Both theoretically and experimentally, hydrophobicity in combination with mildly hydrophilic groups was found to show excellent adhesion of water drop even with a tilt of 180° [29][30][31][32][33]. Similarly, hydrophobic NPs were found to be more easily penetrate lipid membranes in aqueous media [34].…”
