Effect of Fumed Silica Nanoparticles on Ultraviolet Aging Resistance of Bitumen

Abstract: In this study, bitumen modified by fumed silica nanoparticles was characterized through dynamic shear rheometer tests, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The fumed silica nanoparticles were used in three different ratios, i.e., 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 wt.-% of bitumen. Specifically, the modified bitumen characteristics were studied after laboratory aging by analyzing the chemical composition and rheological properties. From the determination of oxidation degree and carbonyl ind… Show more

“…Inter alia, rheological performance of binder and asphalt mixture were all improved with silica NPs, fatigue strength of binder was increased with titanium dioxide NPs, and mechanical and thermal stabilities of asphalt mixtures were improved by clay NPs 20 23 . Silica NPs possess important advantages such as being non-toxic, non-photocatalytic, and inorganic 24 26 . Silica families (based on SiO 2 arrangements) were reported to be one of the best inorganic NPs in improving binder aging properties 27 , 28 .…”

“…Besides, it was observed that the aging resistance and mechanical stability of bitumen to ultraviolet radiation increased. When fumed silica nanoparticles were mixed into bitumen in different proportions (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3%) by weight, the oxidation degree and carbonyl index were found to have improved according to the results of ultraviolet aging [12].…”

“…Asphalt pavement has good skid resistance, low noise and excellent friction resistance, which has been applied as the main structure of expressway pavement in China [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, asphalt pavement is prone to high temperature rutting, low temperature cracking, water damage and spalling [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. In some special natural environments, especially in coastal areas and northwest saline soil areas, corrosion medium such as sulfate–chloride would lead to the serious damage of asphalt pavement after several years of service, and the service life of the road is greatly reduced [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
