-In China, although the production and use of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been banned for decades, relatively high levels of OCP residues have still been found in some water bodies, and can result in adverse acute and chronic effects on zooplankton including rotifers, which have caused public concern for many years. Responses in the population growth and reproduction of freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to four OCPs including aldrin, dieldrin, b-hexachlorocyclohexane (b-HCH) and chlordecone were studied by 3-day population growth and 4-day resting eggs (RE) production tests. In comparison with control, aldrin at 10 mg.L x1 , b-HCH at 1000 mg.L x1 and chlordecone at 0.05 mg.L x1 significantly increased the population growth rate (r); but aldrin at 100 mg.L x1 , dieldrin at 0.001 and 0.1 mg.L x1 , b-HCH at 0.1-100 mg.L x1 and chlordecone at 50 mg.L x1 markedly decreased it. Aldrin at concentrations higher than 1 mg.L x1 , dieldrin at 0.01 and 1000 mg.L x1 , b-HCH at concentrations 0.1 and higher than 1 mg.L x1 , and chlordecone at concentrations 0.005 and higher than 0.5 mg.L x1 significantly decreased the ratio of ovigerous females to non-ovigerous females (OF/NOF), but the reverse was true for aldrin at 0.1 mg.L x1 and b-HCH at 0.001 mg.L x1 . Dieldrin at 0.001, 0.01 and 1000 mg.L x1 significantly decreased the ratio of mictic females to amictic females (MF/AF), but b-HCH at 1 and 10 mg.L x1 highly significantly increased it. Dieldrin at 1000 mg.L x1 and b-HCH at concentrations higher than 10 mg.L x1 markedly decreased the fertilization rate (FR). Both aldrin and chlordecone have no significant effect on the MF/AF and FR of rotifers. Aldrin at concentrations higher than 1 mg.L x1 , dieldrin at lower than 0.1 and higher than 10 mg.L x1 , b-HCH at 1000 mg.L x1 and chlordecone at 0.005, 0.05 and 50.0 mg.L x1 significantly decreased the mictic rate (MR) of rotifers, but the reverse was true for b-HCH at 1 mg.L x1 . Aldrin at 10 mg.L x1 , dieldrin at 0.001, 0.1 and 1000 mg.L x1 , b-HCH at concentrations higher than 1 mg.L x1 and chlordecone at concentrations higher than 0.005 mg.L x1 markedly decreased RE production of rotifers, but b-HCH at 0.01 mg.L x1 significantly increased it. A clear dose-response relationship existed between the RE and the concentration of dieldrin, b-HCH and chlordecone, and the OF/NOF and the aldrin concentration. The RE and OF/NOF in rotifer population might be suitable endpoints for monitoring the low concentration of three OCPs (dieldrin, b-HCH and chlordecone) and aldrin, respectively.

Chlorpyrifos is a widely used organophosphorus insecticide for controlling diverse insect pests of crops. In the monogonont rotifer Brachionus koreanus, population growth retardation with the inhibition of lifespan, fecundity, and individual body size of ovigerous females was shown over 10 d in response to chlorpyrifos exposure. At the molecular and biochemical levels, the rotifer B. koreanus defensome, composed of cytochrome P450 complements, heat shock protein 70, and antioxidant enzymatic systems (i.e., glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase), was significantly induced in response to different concentrations of chlorpyrifos. Thus, chlorpyrifos strongly induced a defensome system to mitigate the deleterious effects of chlorpyrifos at in vivo and in vitro levels as a trade-off in fitness costs. As the numbers of chemical contaminants in freshwater ecosystems increase, it is important to understand whether contaminants interact in ecologically important ways. The present study investigated the independent and interactive effects of 2 contaminants that frequently co-occur in freshwater environments among higher latitudes, including a commonly applied insecticide (carbaryl) and road salt (NaCl). The hypothesis was that the addition of either contaminant would result in a decline in zooplankton, an algal bloom, and the subsequent decline of both periphyton and periphyton consumers. Another hypothesis was that combining the contaminants would result in synergistic effects on community responses. Outdoor mesocosms were used with communities that included phytoplankton, periphyton, zooplankton, amphipods, clams, snails, and tadpoles. Communities were exposed to 4 environmentally relevant concentrations of salt (27 mg Cl L , 77 mg Cl L , 277 mg Cl L , and 727 mg Cl L ) fully crossed with 4 carbaryl treatments (ethanol, 0 µg L , 5 µg L , and 50 µg L ) over 57 d. Contaminants induced declines in rotifer and cladoceran zooplankton, but only carbaryl induced an algal bloom. Consumers exhibited both positive and negative responses to contaminants, which were likely the result of both indirect community interactions and direct toxicity. In contrast to the hypothesis, no synergistic effects were found, although copepod densities declined when high concentrations of both chemicals were combined. The results suggest that low concentrations of salt and carbaryl are likely to have mostly independent effects on aquatic communities. Environ Toxicol Chem 2017;36:771-779. © 2016 SETAC.
