Effect of fortifying amaranth diets with amino acids, casein and ethylene diamine tetra acetate on broiler performance, amino acid availability and mineral utilisation

Abstract: Two feeding trials with broilers (1-31 days of age) were carried out to determine the effect of fortifying grain amaranth based diets with lysine, methionine, casein and ethylene diamine tetra acetate (EDTA) on broiler performance, amino acid availability, plasma amino acid concentrations and nitrogen and mineral retention. In Trial 1, lysine, lysine plus methionine and casein were separately included in six diets containing either 400 g/kg raw or 600 g/kg extruded amaranth. Additionally, one 400 g/kg raw and … Show more

“…Moreover, the results of this study disagree with the results found by Kabuage et al (2002) whom found that the addition of casein (milk protein) to the diets fed to broilers did not affect the feed conversion rations. Casein generally increased the amino acid concentrations such as methionine and isoleucine of the diets which might have enhanced their utilization.…”

“…The chemical composition of milk replacer is 20-24% protein, 15-20% fat, and less than 0.1% fiber (Moran, 2012). Milk powder contains a special type of proteins named casein which was used as a source of protein supplement in broilers feed (Kabuage et al, 2002).…”

“…After harvest, seeds were processed in a hammer mill (Wetmore, Madison, Wisconsin, USA) until apt for inclusion in hen feed. Amaranth was thermally treated in a vertical autoclave (AESA, model CV-250, Mexico City, Mexico), for 45 min at 110°C and 0.5 atmospheres (atm) in order to eliminate the anti-trypsinogen content (Waldroup and Tillman, 1986;Kabuage et al, 2002, Peiretti 2018. The elimination of the anti-trypsinogen content was necessary for the inclusion of amaranth in hen feed.…”
