Developing a bee-friendly alternative to traditional insecticides used within commercial environments can contribute to reductions in pesticide exposure experienced by managed bees. We performed acute contact toxicity studies using fifteen plant powders from seven plant families against a parasitoid pest, Pteromalus venustus, and its host, the Alfalfa leafcutting bee (ALB). Ajwain, cinnamon, clove, cumin, fennel, ginger, nutmeg, oregano and turmeric applied at low contact concentrations had sufficient fumigant properties to cause equivalent or higher parasitoid mortality as that obtained with the traditional insecticide. Nutmeg adversely affected adult ALBs at both low and high contact concentrations, thus eliminating it as a candidate. Increasing the contact concentrations did not consistently increase parasitoid control but did increase adverse effects on the ALBs. In addition, the efficacious plant powders significantly reduced the sexual function and fertility of the female parasitoids, a feature not associated with the traditional insecticide. The dual nature of the mechanisms underlying the effects of the plant powders may translate into effective control of the parasitoid populations in the commercial environment. The results reported here support further evaluations of Ajwain, cinnamon, clove, cumin, fennel, ginger, oregano and turmeric as potential botanical insecticides for control of P. venustus.

Essential oils from botanical extracts used for insect pest control should be both effective and have low impact on natural enemies. The objective was to evaluate the effects of ten essential oils on the biological and reproductive parameters in two Trichogramma galloi Zucchi (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) generations. The emergence F 1 generation of T. galloi was reduced by more than 30% with Allium sativum, Carapa guianensis, Citrus sinensis, Neem and Syzygium aromaticum. Zingiber officinale reduced the T. galloi emergence of the F 1 and F 2 generations by between 30 and 99%. The longevity of the F 1 generation was reduced by more than 50% with Z. officinale at the pre-pupae and pupae stages. All oils reduced the parasitism rate of the F 1 generation in the egg-larva and pre-pupa stages. Allium sativum, C. guianensis and C. sinensis, Neem and Origanum vulgare reduced parasitism by between 30 and 79%. Zingiber officinale was slightly and moderately harmful to the F 1 and F 2 generations, respectively, for the T. galloi parasitism. The sex ratio of the two T. galloi generations was not affected by the essential oils. The low side effects of the oils on the F 2 generation, except for Z. officinale (the most harmful oil), suggest that T. galloi developed some post-transgenerational tolerance/resistance mechanisms to these oils and/or their components. The A. sativum, C. guianensis, C. sinensis, Neem, O. vulgare, S. aromaticum and Z. officinale oils were not selective for T. galloi. Mentha piperita, Piper nigrum and Thymus vulgaris essential oils can be included in integrated pest management programs for this parasitoid.

Geranium macrorrhizum, a potential novel companion plant affecting preference and performance of Myzus persicae on sweet pepper

The combination of a companion plant with a cultivated plant is considered an interesting strategy to reduce pest pressure and, hence, the use of pesticides. Although several plants from the Alliaceae and Lamiaceae families are known to be efficient companion plants against aphid pests, only a few plants of the Geraniaceae family have been studied so far. The aim of this work was to investigate the potential effects of Geranium macrorrhizum as a companion plant on the colonization of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum, Solanaceae) by the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). Aphid's orientation behavior, probing behavior and life history traits were assessed on sweet pepper using a host choice preference setup, Electrical Penetration Graph technique and clip-cage laboratory bioassays, respectively. The potential disturbance through mechanical stimulation of geranium leaves was also assessed. The composition of VOCs from G. macrorrhizum leaves was analyzed using SPME technic followed by GC-MS. This study revealed that G. macrorrhizum as a companion plant was intrinsically repellent but not enough to completely mask the attractive odor of the sweet pepper host plant. Moreover, G. macrorrhizum negatively impacted the probing behavior, fecundity and survival rate of M. persicae on sweet pepper. The effects were exacerbated when G. macrorrhizum leaves were mechanically stimulated. This could be due to the greater amount of the main VOCs germacrone and β-elemenone emitted by G. macrorrhizum following mechanical stimulation. Our results bring new insights into the use of novel companion plants to regulate aphid pest populations.
