Effect of feeding fermented soybean meal on broiler chickens’ performance: a meta-analysis

Abstract: Objective: The present study aimed to quantify the effects of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on broiler chickens' performance by employing a meta-analysis approach. Methods: A total of 16 studies were included in the database after being systematically selected using a PRISMA protocol. Hedges' g effect size was used to quantify pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) using random-effects models at 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Publication bias among studies was computed with Egger's test and visualized us… Show more

“…Many studies indicate that Bacillus strains FPs can improve the growth performance of broilers ( Yeh et al, 2018 ; Irawan et al, 2022 ; Lee et al, 2022 ). Using B. subtilis and B. amyloliquefaciens to produce fermented soybean meal can degrade macromolecular and antigen proteins, and increase the content of micromolecular proteins, peptides, or accessible amino acids ( Lee et al, 2022 ; Suprayogi et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Our results show that the treatment with probiotic cocktails had no significant improvement in broiler chicken production performance, contrary to some existing reports [ 23 ]. This discrepancy may be attributed to variations in probiotic strains and their functional roles under different dietary conditions [ 24 , 25 ], as well as variations in broiler response to probiotics [ 26 ]. BC and PC groups had no significant impact on the average body weight and feed intake from 1 to 42 d. However, they did enhance immune function, indicating that the dosage of both additives is appropriate, making them effective and beneficial feed additives.…”

“…The SE was used in the final dataset whereas it was calculated from SD as SE = SD/sqrt( n ); where n = sample size or the number of replicates. Graphical data were extracted by employing an online tool of WebPlotDigitizer ( https://apps.automeris.io/wpd/ ) to obtain as many as possible data points ( Irawan et al, 2022 ; Sofyan et al, 2022 ). A summary of the characteristics of the studies is provided in Table 1 .…”

“…Bacillus subtilis is among the most popular probiotics in broiler chickens due to its wide beneficial impacts ( Irawan et al, 2022 ; Suprayogi et al, 2022 ), from molecular cell improvement standpoint to growth and health enhancers benefits. In the last decade, there have been advanced-progresses in the use of Bacillus species in broiler chickens ( El-Hack et al, 2020 ; Yaqoob et al, 2022 ), not only as a growth enhancer but also as a disease prevention ( Li et al, 2017 ; Hayashi et al, 2018 ; Whelan et al, 2019 ).…”
