“…Cautious conclusions can be drawn through comparisons of the data of the present study with previous studies identifying significant reductions in the opening amplitude in open/close jaw movements in response to masseter muscle pain induced by hypertonic saline (11,21,47) or glutamate or capsaicin injections (48). The present grouped data analysis shows that noxious anterior temporalis stimulation does not affect open/close or chewing jaw movements and suggests that pain-induced motor effects on jaw movement may be different with noxious stimulation of different jaw muscles.…”

“…Each subject sat in an upright and natural position on a comfortable chair with the back supported, although without head support. In each session, the infusion of either HS or IS was given into the posterior part of the left masseter muscle (MAL) through a disposable, 27‐gauge, stainless‐steel needle inserted approximately 2 cm from the EMG recording sites . Placement of the needle deep in MAL was secured by bony contact, followed by about 2‐mm retractions.…”

“…The experimental set‐up of the EMG recordings has been described in details in a previous paper . The EMG activity was recorded before HS or IS infusion, 120–720 s after start of infusion and 15 min after any pain evoked by the infusion had ceased.…”
