Effect of exogenous abscisic acid on the level of antioxidants in Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz under lead stress

Abstract: This study hypothesized that the positive or negative effects of exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) on oxidative stress caused by lead were dose dependent. The effects of different levels of ABA (2.5, 5, and 10 mg L −1 ) on lead toxicity in the leaves of Atractylodes macrocephala were studied by investigating plant growth, soluble sugars, proteins, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidative enzymes. Excess Pb inhibited root dry weight, root length, and the number of lateral roots, but increased shoot growth. In addition… Show more

“…) and can activate antioxidative defence systems that contribute to the alleviation of heavy metal toxicity (Sharma & Kumar ; Wang et al . ). Moreover, elevated ABA levels in plants can trigger the signalling cascades downstream of phytohormones, such as salicylic acid (SA) and auxin (IAA), which may also mitigate heavy metal‐induced toxicity (Stroinski et al .…”

“…It is interesting that among all the 28 compounds, some were already reported to be pharmacologically effective for the treatment of various symptoms. For instance, tanshinone IIA has been confirmed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-ischemic, antioxidant, and antitumor activities [23]. Tanshinone IIA not only has a powerful inhibitory effect on the proliferation of ER-positive human breast cells in vitro , but also significantly inhibits the growth of human ER-negative breast in vivo , without any untoward toxicity.…”

“…Atractylodes Macrocephala Koidz (Bai-Zhu), as a valuable traditional Chinese medicine, is an important component of several Chinese herbal prescriptions and has been used for treating various diseases for thousands of years all over the world duo to its special pharmacological activities [23]. Atractylodes Macrocephala Koidz , a member of the Compositae can invigorate the spleen, and cure patients with splenic asthenia, anorexia, oedema, excessive perspiration and abnormal fetal movement.…”

“…The first strategy was achieved by: (1) Overexpression of phytochelatin synthase (PCS) which was significant overexpressed with high levels of Cd and Pb. Phytochelatin synthase responsible for phytochelatin synthesis, which bind to toxic heavy metals forming complexes that are stored into cellular compartments such as vacuoles and (Wang et al 2013). (2) The significantly increase in glutathione S-transferase enzyme that transfers glutathione to the toxic compounds and decrease glutathione content may be deduced by its consumption in glutathione S-transferase and in phytochelatin synthesis as a precursor of phytochelatin or in binding with heavy metals (Lin and Aarts 2012).…”
