Effect of Eucalyptus Oil Inhalation on Pain and Inflammatory Responses after Total Knee Replacement: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Eucalyptus oil has been reported effective in reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of eucalyptus oil inhalation on pain and inflammatory responses after total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. Participants were randomized 1 : 1 to intervention group (eucalyptus inhalation group) or control group (almond oil inhalation group). Patients inhaled eucalyptus or almond oil for 30 min of continuous passive motion (CPM) on 3 consecutive days. Pain on a visual analog scal… Show more

“…Although analgesic medications are effective in reducing pain and nausea, uncomfortable side effects can prolong the healing process and increase hospitalization time [20]. In a randomized control study to examine pain management after total knee replacement surgery, patients treated with eucalyptus aromatherapy experienced significantly lower pain and blood pressure than the control group [21]. A study that examined lavender aromatherapy in patients recovering from breast biopsy surgery found that the aromatherapy group reported a significantly higher satisfaction with pain management than the control group, even though rates of pain, narcotic use, and discharge time were the same [20].…”

“…Based on the results of a previous trial (Moss et al, ), the level of significance and power were set at .05 and 0.95, respectively. The effect size of 0.80, which was large according to Cohen's formula (Sullivan & Feinn, ), was based on systolic BP, one of the primary indicators in this study (Jun et al, ). The number of subjects was calculated using the G‐power program version 3.1, with the minimum number of subjects required for each group was 35.…”

“…The data revealed that different neurochemical pathways were responsible for their action on cognition and subjective state. Jun et al [148] reported that the inhalation of eucalyptus oil effectively decreased patient’s pain and blood pressure after total knee replacement surgery.…”
