The specific consumption and carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NO) emissions from gasolines formulated with ethanol, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) were evaluated in the rich, stoichiometric and lean-burn regions during the operation of an Otto-cycle engine. The use of ethanol as an additive presented high specific consumption, while gasoline formulated with TAEE showed low specific consumption with the engine operating under lean-burn conditions. The ethers evaluated here presented a low percentage of CO in the rich-burn region when compared with ethanol.

In diesel engine, fuel injection timing is a major parameter that affects combustion, performance and emission characteristics. Variation in injection timing has a strong effect on BTE, BSFC, BSEC, smoke and NOx emissions because of the change in maximum pressure and temperature in engine cylinder. In this experimental investigation, the optimum performance DEE-diesel blend ratio DE15D (15% DEE and 85% diesel by volume) was tested for variable injection timings to evaluate its effect and determine the optimum fuel injection timing, as the addition of DEE to diesel fuel causes retardation in dynamic injection timing. The engine tests were carried out at 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of full load with 3º and 6º advancement, base and 3º and 7º retarded injection timings. The test results show that BSFC and BSEC provide the best result for the base injection timing at full load condition. The 6 º advancement in injection timing at full load condition reduced smoke by 12.5% and HC by 15.38%. The retarded injection timing by 7º at full load showed improvement in BTE by 7.96% and in NOx by 3.66%.

Biokraftstoffe wie Bioethanol, Biobutanol und Biodiesel erfahren zunehmendes Interesse als Alternativen zu Brennstoffen auf Erdölbasis, denn sie versprechen als regenerierbare Energieträger eine langfristige und nachhaltige Perspektive mit vorteilhafter Klimabilanz. Gegenwärtige Diskussionen befassen sich mit der Produktion dieser Brennstoffe, ihrer Kompatibilität mit vorhandenen Motoren und Versorgungsstrukturen sowie der Konkurrenz zwischen der Herstellung von Biokraftstoffen und Nahrungsmitteln. Die Verbrennungschemie der Biokraftstoffe hat dagegen bisher nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. In diesem Aufsatz beschreiben wir wesentliche Aspekte der chemischen Reaktionswege bei der Verbrennung prototypischer Vertreter potenzieller Biokraftstoffe wie Alkohole, Ether und Ester. Im Vordergrund stehen dabei die Zersetzungs‐ und Oxidationsmechanismen sowie mögliche unerwünschte Emissionen. Neue experimentelle Methoden und Modellstudien erlauben detaillierte Einblicke in die hochkomplexen Netzwerke chemischer Reaktionen bei der Verbrennung von Biokraftstoffen. Die Chemie dieser Prozesse zu verstehen ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die verantwortungsbewusste Auswahl alternativer Kraftstoffe der nächsten Generation.
