Effect of etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes in universal adhesives on push-out bond strength of fiber post

Abstract: Background Nowadays, the universal adhesive become more popular among clinicians due to its simple procedure. The application of universal adhesive on root canal dentin prior the self-adhesive resin cement may increase bond-strength between fiber post and dentin. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different etching modes (etch-and-rinse and self-etch) to universal adhesives on push-out bond strength of fiber post. Material and Methods Thirty extra… Show more

“…Additionally, the scrubbing method when apply the adhesive and 15 seconds solvent evaporation may enhance bond strength in universal adhesive. 27,29 On the other hand, for dentin etching time, most respondents (90 respondents -85.7%) answered 10 seconds, 12 respondents (11.4%) answered 15 seconds, and three respondents (2.9%) answered 20 seconds. A previous study conducted by Burrer et al in 2020 about etching trials on dentin structures with different times: 15 seconds (control group); 7.5 seconds; 30 seconds; 60 seconds; 120 seconds; using 3M Scotchbond Universal product, resulted in an etching time of 7.5 seconds has a significant decrease in bond strength.…”

“…Fiber post have elastic modulus as same as dentin and its simple procedure by cementing it using an adhesive technique. 27 Previous study mentioned that bond strength of the adhesive system in fiber post cementation were depend on the hybrid layer and resin tag. 28 Total-etch adhesive system has a longer procedure during fiber post cementation.…”

“…Also bonding procedures for coronal and radicular dentin are similar, but variations exist in dentin structural components, mineral composition, and properties based on location and physiological changes due to aging and pathology [ 47 ]. Kusumasari et al compared the push-out bonding strenght of self-etch and total-etch modes of universal adhesive systems on apical and coronal dentin surfaces and associated the low bond strength of etch and rinse systems with the exposure of a deeper collagen-fibril network after excessive acid exposure [ 48 ].…”

“…Regarding the most recurrent failure patterns, the results indicated a higher incidence of cohesive failures in the WB-RB, NB-MB, and NB-RB groups, while WB-MB was adhesive. Considering that adhesive failure indicates a potentially weaker interaction between the adhesive system and the dental substrate 37) , the hypothesis is raised that the passive application of the adhesive system was less effective in interacting with a hypermineralized substrate due to impregnation with bioceramic sealer, possibly due to the lower infiltration capacity of the adhesive system, suggesting the active use of application. After 1 year, as expected, with the degradation of the hybrid layer, there is a decrease in bond strength 36) , and adhesive failures were predominant in all groups.…”
