Purpose: Dexamethasone has been widely used to treat acute inflammatory diseases and endotoxic shocks in animal models. Meloxicam is one of the most commonly used antiinflammatory agents in avian species. However, little is known about the effects of dexamethasone and meloxicam on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute inflammatory response in birds. In the present study, LPS-challenged broiler chickens were used to investigate the comparative protective effects of meloxicam and dexamethasone on LPSinduced acute inflammatory responses. Methods: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) histopathological scores, selected serum acute phase reactants, inflammatory mediators, and gangliosides were evaluated in broiler chickens inoculated with E. coli LPS and simultaneously treated with two doses of meloxicam (0.5 and 2 mg/kg BW) and dexamethasone (2 and 4 mg/kg BW). Results: LPS-induced ALI scores were not significantly different between the meloxicamtreated, dexamethasone-treated, and untreated positive control groups at 4 hours after LPS inoculation. Interleukin-6 concentrations were also statistically the same among the positive control, dexamethasone-treated, and meloxicam-treated groups at 3 and 12 hours after LPS inoculation. However, these anti-inflammatory drugs reduced adenosine deaminase, ceruloplasmin, lipid-bound sialic acid, protein-bound sialic acid, and total sialic acid in LPS-inoculated broiler chickens at 12, 24, and 48 hours after LPS inoculation in a drug-and dose-dependent manner. Ovotransferrin concentrations were not significantly different between positive control and treatment groups at 12 hours after LPS inoculation. However, twenty-four hours after LPS inoculation, all the treated groups, except the one treated with 0.5 mg/kg meloxicam, showed significantly lower concentrations of ovotransferrin as compared with the positive control group. Conclusion: Our results showed that dexamethasone was more effective than meloxicam in inhibiting the LPS-induced response in broiler chickens by diminishing the serum levels of adenosine deaminase, ceruloplasmin, and gangliosides.

The importance of poultry industry to the world' economy is increasing. The current methods for identifying chickens' health problems are traditional and looking for new tools to diagnose poultry problems is of vital importance. Poultry industry is affected by infectious and metabolic disorders which are common in chickens and affect their well-being, cause stress, reduce performance and increase mortality. Measuring the acute phase proteins; secreted from the liver as a result of inflammation and/or infection that can be measured in plasma; levels were found to be useful in assessment of health status and prediction of diseases of the animals, and useful markers of inflammation in veterinary clinical pathology. Thus, acute phase proteins as diagnostic markers may be of a great value in identifying chickens' health problems, and thereby should allow optimal and fast measures to improve chickens' health and welfare. Although a wide range of studies has been carried out to determine the usefulness of acute phase proteins in several diseases in ruminants, their use as indicators in detection of diseases in chickens is less well documented. For this reason, this review article deals with the role of acute phase proteins in chickens' welfare, and brings together the studies on acute phase proteins that have been undertaken in chickens. In this review article, the immune system, acute phase response and the general diagnostic utility of acute phase proteins in veterinary practice were given. In addition, the most important acute phase proteins in chickens and their diagnostic utility in relation to metabolic disorders, inflammation, common chickens' diseases and stress were thoroughly discussed. Finally, this review highlights research gaps and directions deserving further development to create a better understanding of acute phase proteins for making these biomarkers a perfect predictive tool for chickens' health status and valuable diagnostic approaches in chickens.

This review brings together and consolidates the large amount of research on acute phase proteins (APPs) that has been undertaken in chickens. Acute phase proteins are secreted from the liver as a result of inflammation or infection that can be measured in plasma. They have been well-characterised in other farm animal species and have been measured in a wide variety of poultry research areas. The acceleration in chicken APP research is in response to increased interest in ways the immune responses of the chicken can be measured and compared during infection or environmental or nutritional changes. All APPs that have been identified and characterised in chickens are described in the following review and their responses during infection discussed. The APPs are tabulated with basal values and classification to provide a comparative and useful reference. The ways APPs can be measured in chickens and the assays available are also described. This review will detail the functions of the positive APPs in chickens and their behaviour during an APR.
