Sustainable development of the important economic species, Asian paddle crab (Charybdis japonica), has attracted attention in the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, China. The commonly used round pots are almost nonselective, resulting in severe bycatch of juveniles. In this study, we explored a method to improve the size selectivity for C. japonica by mounting escape vents on the side panels of each pot. The selectivity of pots with escape vent sizes of 70 mm × 20 mm, 70 mm × 25 mm, 70 mm × 30 mm, and 70 mm × 35 mm was tested using a catch comparison method. The estimated minimum landing size (MLS) of carapace height (27 mm), according to the regulated MLS of carapace length (50 mm), was used as a reference point to explain the results. Significant increases in the size of crabs caught by pots were found with the enlargement of escape vent size (Kruskal–Wallis test, P < 0.01). The pots with 70 mm × 20 mm, 70 mm × 25 mm and 70 mm × 30 mm escape vents released nearly 50%, 75% and 95% of undersized individuals, respectively, and these three types of pots retained approximately 90% of legal-sized individuals compared with the control pots without escape vents. The pots with 70 mm × 35 mm escape vents released nearly all undersized individuals, but they also released most legal-sized individuals. Pots with an escape vent size of 70 mm × 30 mm were recommended for the sustainable development of C. japonica in the Yellow Sea of China. The results of this study reiterate the importance of carapace height for determining the size selectivity, which can serve as a reference to formulate management regulations in the coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, China.

Nguồn lợi thủy sản nói chung và nguồn lợi ghẹ đang có xu hướng suy giảm, cùng với đó là sự gia tăng khai thác các đối tượng ghẹ non, ghẹ có kích thước nhỏ hơn kích thước lần đầu tham gia sinh sản. Vì vậy, việc thực hiện các biện pháp phù hợp để giảm đánh bắt ghẹ non, ghẹ có kích thước nhỏ hơn quy định nhằm tăng số lượng ghẹ đạt kích thước khai thác là điều cần thiết. Một trong những biện pháp được xem xét đó là lắp đặt các cửa thoát trên lồng bẫy ghẹ hình trụ tròn Hải Phòng. Chúng tôi đã thử nghiệm hình dạng, vị trí và kích thước cửa thoát trong bể thí nghiệm. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy, trong các hình dạng cửa thoát thử nghiệm (gồm: hình vuông, hình chữ nhật và hình tròn), hình vuông cho kết quả thoát ghẹ non tốt nhất; ở 05 vị trí đặt cửa thoát (gồm: Góc dưới của tấm lưới hom, giữa tấm lưới hom, phía trên của tấm lưới hông, phía dưới của tấm lưới hông, tấm lưới trên), vị trí phía dưới của tấm lưới hông cho tỷ lệ thoát ghẹ non tốt nhất; Qua thử nghiệm cửa thoát hình vuông kích thước 55×55mm cho thấy, chiều rộng mai mà ở đó 50% cá thể bị giữ lại trong lồng CW50% = 92,65 mm, hệ số SR = 19,08, tần suất phân bố kích thước chiều rộng mai ghẹ lớn hơn 120mm không có cá thể nào thoát ra khỏi lồng, trong khi đó tất cả ghẹ có chiều rộng mai nhỏ hơn 70mm đều thoát ra khỏi lồng; cửa thoát hình vuông 50×50mm cho thấy, chiều rộng mai mà ở đó 50% cá thể bị giữ lại trong lồng CW50% = 88,57 mm, hệ số SR = 19,5, tần suất kích thước chiều rộng mai ghẹ lớn hơn 110mm không có cá thể nào thoát ra khỏi lồng và một số cá thể ghẹ có chiều rộng mai nhỏ hơn 70mm vẫn bị giữa lại trong lồng.

This study presents an overview of the condition of the crab (Portunus pelagicus) resources in the waters of Bangkalan Madura, as an export commodity its production relies on the catch, one of the locations of the catchment area is in the Fisheries Management Area 712 where this research was carried out. The frequency of fishing efforts continues to increase because of the high economic value, however, there is not much information about the condition of the resources. Descriptive research method with the aim of mapping crab resources based on the "Non-Equilibrium Walter-Hilbron Model". The results showed that the maximum catch production (CMSY) was 63,886.114 kg/year with standard Trammel net fishing gear, the intrinsic growth was 50.91%/year, the carrying capacity of the waters was 50195,336 Kg/year, the dominant species was (Portunus pelagicus), the optimal effort (Eopt) was 6363750 trips/year with a potential resource of 25097,668 kg/year. In conclusion, this research can be used as a basis for resource mapping as a follow-up to Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Regulations Number 70/2016 concerning the Management Plan for Crab in the WPP.
