Effect of Emollients Containing Vegetable-DerivedLactobacillusin the Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis Symptoms: Split-Body Clinical Trial

Abstract: BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) patients suffer from xerosis. Proper skin care, including the use of emollients, may help improve xerosis and minimize disease exacerbation. Lactobacillus sakei probio 65, isolated from the Korean vegetable-based product kimchi, can decrease interleukin 4 and immunoglobulin E levels and inhibit Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, it has reportedly shown positive dermatological effects in both animal and clinical studies.ObjectiveTo compare the effects of an emollient that contains… Show more

“…Skin emollients are a critical component of AD treatment because they rehydrate the skin, improve the skin barrier function [ 17 19 ], and reduce the severity of AD [ 18 , 20 ]. Furthermore, emollients may prevent the development of eczema in infants at high risk for AD when used regularly in the first six months of life [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Restoration of the normal skin barrier function by emollient use can down-regulate inflammation and reduce the symptoms and flares of AD 15 . Additionally, regular use of emollient may also reduce the need for topical corticosteroid by 50% 16 . Consequently, regular use of emollient is important in AD management.…”

“…In 16 subjects with xerosis, application of Lactobacillus brevis ‐containing ointment for 4 weeks significantly decreased transepidermal water loss (TEWL), decreased xerosis, and increased commensal bacterial colonization compared to vehicle (Holz et al, ). Application of Lactobacillus sakei‐ containing emollient significantly decreased pruritus and TEWL in 28 AD subjects (Park et al, ). Only three subjects in either study experienced treatment‐related adverse effects, reporting self‐limited mild application site reactions.…”
