This research investigated and developed a laminate packaging film of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing modified chitosan nanoparticles (MCSNPs) treated with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate silane (TMSPM) which functioned both as a reinforcement and as an antimicrobial filler. Electron beam irradiation caused crosslink between the PVA and MCSNP molecules via the free radical of carbonyl in the methacrylate group of TMSPM-grafted chitosan nanoparticles and the free radical of hydroxyl group in poly(vinyl alcohol). This improved the PVA hydrophobicity. In addition, the laminate with PVA-g-MCSNPs film irradiated with a 30 kGy electron beam showed the best performance properties due to improved interfacial adhesion between PLA and PVA-g-MCSNPs. As a consequence, the mechanical and thermal properties improved. The 30 kGy irradiated film also had better antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

In the quest for innovative solutions to industrial oil/water emulsion separation challenges, this study introduces a unique chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/s-triazine (CPT) hydrogel and its hydrogel-coated mesh (CPTM), meticulously designed at the nanoscale for advanced separation. Featuring a sophisticated double-network, dual cross-linked nano-architecture, the CPTM exhibits unparalleled superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, achieving separation efficiency exceeding 99.4% even under corrosive conditions such as acidic, alkaline, and saline environments. This high efficiency is particularly notable for emulsions, where micro/nanosized droplets are stabilized and notoriously difficult to separate, marking a significant advancement over existing solutions. The incorporation of trifunctional s-triazine enhances the hydrogel's mechanical stability and imparts potent antibacterial properties, effectively reducing biofouling risks and extending the material's lifespan. The hydrogel's self-healing and self-cleaning capabilities further ensure its durability and reusability, maintaining performance over 50 separation cycles and underscoring its practical applicability. This research not only advances the field of oil/water emulsion separation technology but also opens scalable, energy-efficient avenues for the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable materials. The multifunctional capabilities of the CPTM, including superior separation efficiency, robust mechanical strength, antibacterial activity, biofilm inhibition, and sustained performance, hold great promise for widespread applications in the petroleum industry and environmental conservation efforts. By emphasizing the pivotal role of nanoscale engineering in developing advanced materials, this study paves the way for future innovations in addressing environmental challenges.

While perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), also known as C8s, are used extensively in textile repellent coatings, concerns have arisen for their carcinogenicity and hazardous effects on the environment. In this study, a novel water‐based, nonfluoro, and nanobrush textile repelling agent was prepared by conventional sol–gel chemistry using amorphous fumed silica and n‐octyltriethoxysilane as the starting materials. Minimal interaction between the designed repelling agent and marketed water‐based resins was confirmed using linear viscosity region (LVR) analysis and asymmetric‐flow field‐flow fractionation (AF4), suggesting the self‐stratification potential of the repelling agent. More specifically, the repelling agent exhibited excellent compatibility and self‐stratifying ability with a force‐emulsified acrylic‐based resin, affording a water contact angle of 104.3° when incorporated at 7% solid content. Performance tests carried out on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) revealed excellent adhesion (100/100) of a final formulation, and a significant increase in water contact angle from 80.1° to 103.8° after treatment. In addition, the fouling area after the removal of a submerged sample from a mixture of slurry, polymer, and oil decreased from 48 to 1% when the repelling agent was added. Moreover, the sludge‐fouling property remained unchanged after 1000 cycles of abrasion. These findings demonstrate the potential of the described nonfluoro, nanobrush repelling agent as an environmentally safe alternative for use with commercial resins, in turn realizing a fully water‐based hydrophobic coating. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
