Effect of electromagnetic centrifugal casting on solidification microstructure of cast high speed steel roll

Abstract: Using self-made electromagnetic centrifugal casting machine, optical microscopy (OM) and D/ max2200pc X-ray diffraction, the solidification microstructure and phases of as-cast high speed steel(HSS) roll made by sand casting, centrifugal casting and electromagnetic centrifugal casting were investigated. The experiment results show that the phases of as-cast high speed steel (HSS) roll are alloy carbide (such as W 2 C, VC, Cr 7 C 3 ), martensite and austenite. The centrifugal casting and electromagnetic centrif… Show more

“…Except having excellent fracture resistance, its surface must have excellent wear and heat resistance, because the quality of rolls not only affects the product cost, but also immediately determines product quality and working rate of rolling mill. For these reasons, the study on improving the wear resistance of hot rolling rolls causes home and overseas attention, the materials of hot rolling rolls have been improved and developed ceaselessly, from common chilled iron [1], indefinite chilled alloy iron [2], high chromium cast iron and high chromium cast steel [3] to high speed steel (HSS) [4] and powder metallurgy (PM) hard metal [5] that are now widely used in overseas market.…”

“…The Vickershardness of eutectic boride is in the range of 1430 -1480 [13]. The design idea of high boron iron-basedalloyistouse boride to replace carbide in white castiron, and to use medium or low carbon matrix to replace high carbon matrix.…”

“…However, the toughness of the material in some conditions still cannot meet the requirements. Alloying is another way to improve toughness of Fe-B-C ternary alloysteel [13]. It should be noted that most of the works on improving toughness of high boron iron-based alloy mainly focus on thistwo ways.…”

“…Third, the service life of the roll is usually short because it is difficult to obtain both high surface hardness and core part toughness [1,2]. In light of this condition, centrifugal casting [3,4], a continuous pouring process for cladding (CPC) [5], and electroslag surfacing with the liquid metal method (ESSLM) [6] have been developed for the production of bimetallic compound rolls. Compared to single material rolls, the compound roll consists of internal material with toughness and external material with stronger hardness.…”
