Effect of elcatonin on experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers.

Abstract: Abstract-The antiulcer action of elcatonin, an analogue of natural eel calcitonin , was compared with that of cimetidine, secretin and solcoseryl.Elcatonin (3 to 10 u/kg, s.c.) inhibited the development of gastric ulcers induced by pylorus ligation, water immersion stress, aspirin and reserpine and duodenal ulcers induced by cysteamine in rats. Moreover, once daily injections of elcatonin (1 to 10 u/kg/day, s.c.) promoted the healing of acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers not only in rats but in dogs.Th… Show more

“…Intestinal absorption of calcium is increased by CT . Elcatonin, a synthetic eel calcitonin, has been shown to inhibit gastric and duodenal ulcers . Calcitonin receptor‐like receptors have been localized to the human GI tract, and the peptide hormone gastrin, responsible for the secretion of gastric acid by parietal cells, significantly upregulates CT secretion ,,.…”

“…These results suggest that this peripheral activity of (Asu1,7) eel-Calcitonin does not involve a direct interference with cholinergic, histaminergic or serotoninergic pathways at gastric level. At the same time Ohno et al 20 For the sake of historical justice, it should be noted that the gastroprotective effect (by pylorus ligation) of salmon calcitonin was discovered back in 1983 in the USSR 23 , but remained invisible to the scientific community, probably because of the iron curtain.…”

“…Elcatonin has been shown to prevent experimental ulcer formation (5,6), without any significant inhibition of histamine or bethanechol-induced acid secretion (7). Pos sible mechanisms of its action seem, there fore, to be different from that of H2-receptor antagonists or anticholinergics.…”
