The current research was carried out to test the effects of edible coatings (EC) enriched with laurel essential oil (EC+LEO) on the storability of strawberry 'Camarosa' fruits. Freshly harvested strawberry fruits were randomly separated into three groups and each group was treated with a different treatment, including EC, EC+LEO and control. Fruits were stored at 4.0 ± 1.0 °C and a relative humidity of 90-95% for 15 days. Results suggested that both EC and EC+LEO have positive effects of the quality parameters of strawberry fruits and help to improve the storage duration of the fruits. After 15 days of storage, the average weight loss of the control fruits reached to 12.44%, but was kept at 9.06% and 7.13% at the EC and EC+LEO treated fruits, respectively. Both the EC and EC+LEO treatments were found to have positive impact on the prevention of disease severity and chemical spoilage and lowering respiration rate of the fruits. The loss in the fruit firmness, soluble solids concentration, ascorbic acid content and titratable acidity of the fruits were also found to delay in the coated fruits. The EC+LEO treatment was found to have better performance than the EC treatment. Overall results recommended that the edible coatings enriched with laurel essential oil improve the storability of strawberry fruits and have possibility to be used in postharvest industry.

In this research article, a hybrid multiple‐criteria decision‐making approach was implemented to select the optimal brake friction formulation according to several conflicting performance‐defining criteria. Friction material formulations based on different abrasives (magnesium oxide, iron oxide, zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, zirconium dioxide, and silicon dioxide) were designed, fabricated, and tested for various tribological properties. The inclusions of aluminum oxide proved best from performance and fade coefficient of friction, friction stability, friction fluctuations, and friction variability point of view but confirmed worst in terms of wear and disc temperature rise. The lowest wear and lowest rise in disc temperature were exhibited by zinc oxide added composite. The highest recovery coefficient of friction was displayed by silicon dioxide added composite. Since no single composite alternative could merely satisfy all the desired attributes. To find the optimum composite option for automotive braking application, hybrid analytic hierarchy process (AHP)–criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC)–technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) was used to make the final decision. The results show that the formulation with titanium dioxide as abrasive exhibits the optimal properties.

The shelf life of horticultural commodities depends on pre‐ and postharvest factors, such as soil fertilization and postharvest handling. The current study aimed to evaluate fresh‐cut celery's postharvest quality as affected by the rate and type (organic and chemical) of nitrogen (N) fertilizer and postharvest treatments. Celery (‘Tall Utah’) crop was grown in a field in Karaj, Iran. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications and seven preharvest (fertilizer), and five postharvest treatments. Organic fertilizers were vermicompost (VER) and bio‐organic fertilizer [farmyard and livestock manure plus Trichoderma harzianum (COM)]. Chemical fertilizers were urea (46% N) at high rate [322 kg·ha1 N (UREA_HIGH)], optimal rate [196 kg·ha−1 N (UREA_OPT)], and low rate [138 kg·ha−1 N (UREA_LOW)]; ammonium nitrate [35% N (AN)] at 196 kg·ha−1 N; and treatment without fertilization was used as a control. Postharvest treatments included plastic packaging (PP), hydrocooling (HC), blanching (B), and edible coating of psyllium seed mucilage (EC). After postharvest treatments, celery petioles were stored (0–2°C, 85%–90% RH) for 4 weeks and evaluated weekly for quality attributes. Organic fertilizers and UREA_LOW were the most effective treatments in reducing the changes in color, weight loss, titratable acidity (TA), pH, and total soluble solids (TSS) of fresh‐cut celery. Organic fertilizers enhanced the vitamin C content, total phenols, and antioxidant activity in celeries. As postharvest treatments, hydrocooling, plastic packaging, and blanching maintained chroma and hue values. Blanching had the greatest effect on the L* value. Hydrocooling increased celery's TA, TSS, and vitamin C content and reduced weight loss and pH during storage. Thus, celery quality was improved when grown under low or adequate N fertilization. Hydrocooling was an effective postharvest treatment for preserving fresh‐cut celery quality during storage.
