Effect of Drought Stress on Yield and Quality Traits of Common Wheat During Grain Filling Stage

Abstract: Wheat (T. aestivum) has a crucial role for human diet especially in developing countries. Changes in precipitation intensity, amounts and patterns restrict wheat growth and productivity under rainfed conditions. Thus, assessment of drought effects during growth stages of wheat on grain yield and quality traits has substantial importance. Grain filling stage, coincides with early spring when the rainfall pattern highly variable, was considered in this study to evaluate effects of drought conditions on yield and… Show more

“…Although drought stress during the booting stage inhibited spikelet development and reduced the number of spikelets, we established that the effects on the NIS were non-significant. These findings are consistent with those presented by Tatar et al (2020), who observed drought-induced reductions in spike and spikelet numbers during the stem elongation stage. The lower NGS in wheat exposed to the low-water treatment can be assumed to reflect insufficient spikelet development.…”

“…Furthermore, the findings of some studies have indicated that the concentration of grain proteins initially increases and subsequently declines in response to an increase in drought stress degree (Silva et al, 2020;Yan et al, 2020). In the present study, we detected reductions in protein concentrations in the grains of wheat subjected to the low-water treatment, which is consistent with the findings of Meng et al (2016), but contrasts with observations of Silva et al (2020); Tatar et al (2020), andYan et al (2020). We suspect that these discrepant findings could reflect differences in the respective intensities of the applied stresses.…”

“…Drought is one of the most important environmental factors and severely impact crop growth, yield and quality ( Krasensky and Jonak, 2012 ; Zhang et al, 2014 ; Tatar et al, 2020 ). After long terms of evolution, plants have developed various strategies to cope with deleterious effects of drought, which deserves in-depth investigation.…”

“…Development of cultivars characterised by a high and stable GY represents one of the main goals in winter wheat breeding programs. Moreover, different winter wheat cultivars showed a contrasting performance across different environments due to a significant GEI (Hristov et al, 2010b;Tatar et al, 2020). Knowledge about GEI is important for crop breeders, since GEI complicates the selection of superior genotypes affecting breeding strategies, multi-environmental testing, time, and the allocation of resources (de Leon et al, 2016).…”
