Effect of drought on biomass, protein content, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in two sesame cultivars

Abstract: The effects of drought on growth, protein content, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POX), catalase (CAT) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) were studied in leaves and roots of Sesamum indicum L. cvs. Darab 14 and Yekta. Four weeks after sowing, plants were grown under soil moisture corresponding to 100, 75, 50 and 25 % field capacity for next four weeks. Fresh and dry masses, and total protein content in leaves and roots decreased obviously under drought. However, several new proteins appe… Show more

“…In our study, drought significantly increased MDA at both light levels, indicating the occurrence of damage to membranes (Fazeli et al, 2007). Similar results have been previously reported by Huang et al (2008).…”

“…CAT was shown increased under drought treatment in e.g Prunus, tomato, sesame, alfalfa or wheat (Rubio et al, 2002;Luna et al, 2004;Sofo et al, 2005;Őnayayar, 2005;Naya et al, 2007;Fazeli et al, 2007), but decreased or unchanged in sunflower, pea and some grasses (Iturbe-Ormaetxe et al, 1998;Fu and Huang, 2001). In our piece, a new CAT isozyme was induced under drought conditions, but the total CAT activity did not increase significantly under drought stress.…”

“…There is evidence in some plant species (wheat, mangrove, sesame) that tolerance to abiotic stresses is correlated with enhanced capacity to scavenge ROS in tolerant genotypes Parida et al, 2004;Fazeli et al, 2007;KhannaChopra and Selote, 2007). From the other hand, the enhanced ROS scavenging capacity could be the response to higher ROS production of sensitive genotypes compared to tolerant once as showed in winter wheat (Simova-Stoilova et al, 2009).…”

“…Lipid peroxidation assay was carried out by thiobarbituric acid (TBA) method, wherein thiobarbituric acid reacting substances (TBARS) act as an indicator of membrane lipid peroxidation which was measured in terms of malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (Heath and Packer 1968;Fazeli et al 2007). 0.2 g leaf samples from both the sites were weighed and homogenized in 4 ml of 0.1 % trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution.…”
