Highlight Research Use of maggot oil as an addition to feed can increase the level of feed consumption of carp. The addition of maggot oil ( illucens) had a significant effect (P<0.05) on TFC, FCR, FUE, SGR, and survival of common carp. The use of maggot oil can be an alternative to using feed that is more effective and economical. Abstract The demand for common carp (Cyprinus carpio) either its seed or consumption measures has increased every year. Fish growth can be increased by adding nutrients in the form of animal oil sources. An alternative ingredient that can be used to support fish growth with good nutritional content and relatively inexpensive is maggot oil or black soldier fly (H. illucens) oil. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of maggot oil (H. illucens) in artificial feed on the growth performance of common carp and to determine the best dose of maggot oil. This study used a complete randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and three replicates: A, B, C, and D with the addition of maggot oil doses of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. The test fish used was a common carp fry measuring 3.59±0.06 cm, 0.79±0.05 g. Observation time was 30 days with a stocking density of 15 fish/aquarium. The results showed that the addition of maggot oil (H. illucens) had a significant effect (P<0.05) on TFC, FCR, FUE, SGR, and survival. Based on the results of the study, the best dose was obtained in the addition of 15% maggot oil with value of TFC 10.57±0.26 g, FCR 1.52±0.03, FUE 65.43±1.54%, SGR 1.57±0.04%/day, and SR 95.56±3.85%. For further research, it is possible to use magot oil to increase carp production.

Water is the most precious natural resource and its quality must be checked before use. Water sources should be monitored regularly to determine whether they are in good condition or not. The poor water quality is not only an indicator of environmental degradation but also a threat to ecosystems, including aquaculture activities. The success of koi fish farming is generally determined by an understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological qualities of water. It is necessary to research water quality analysis to determine the environmental condition through a comparison of two different types of ponds (traditional and filter). The research method is descriptive. Water quality analysis in each pond includes parameters of temperature, pH, water brightness (cm), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Organic Matter (TOM), Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), Orthophosphate, Ammonia, Nitrate, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). This research activity was carried out as a community service, related to monitoring the water quality of koi fish farming ponds in the Nglegok sub-district, Blitar Regency, East Java. The results of temperature in traditional ponds were lower than in filter ponds. Meanwhile, CO 2 and ammonia levels in traditional ponds and filter ponds exceed the optimal quality standard for the koi fish viability. However, other parameters are quite good for koi fish cultivation. In cultivation activities, three important components are interconnected and affect each other, the environment, the host, and the pathogen. Optimization of water quality management can be applied by using aeration or filtration, calculating feed conversion to reduce organic material residues, and regularly changing the water.

Aquaponics has the potential to contribute to food security in urban Nepal, where agricultural land near cities is rapidly being converted for other uses. This system’s use is expanding in Nepal, but the relatively high cost of commercial fish food is a hindrance. As a result, some aquaponics operators are resorting to alternative, less expensive fish foods. Since the primary input of nutrients to the plants grown in aquaponics comes from the fish food, an evaluation of the impact of fish foods on plant and fish growth is needed to help operators evaluate the costs and benefits of commercial compared to alternative fish diets. This study evaluated the growth of lettuce and common carp, the most common species of plant and fish used in aquaponics in Nepal, with three fish diets (commercial fish food, commercial chicken food, and a homemade diet with mustard oil cake and rice bran) at a commercial aquaponics farm with nine identical systems allowing for three replicates of the three fish food treatments. There were no significant differences in the measurements of lettuce growth (stem length, root length, and stem mass) and few differences in nutrient concentrations in leaf tissue. The specific growth rate of the carp fingerlings was lowest for the fish in the systems fed with the homemade diet (0.21) compared to those fed commercial fish food or commercial chicken food (0.31 and 0.28, respectively). These findings suggest that aquaponics operators who have been buying the more expensive commercial fish food with fish meal as its protein source can save 60–95% of the related costs by using commercial chicken food or the homemade diet defined in this study. This could potentially encourage the expansion of aquaponics systems in Nepal.
