Effect of Disodium Cromoglycate on Exercise-induced Asthma

Abstract: In eight patients with exercise-induced asthma, disodium cromoglycate was found to produce a definite inhibition of the post-exercise fall in forced expiratory volume in one second. This effect may be part of the cause for the subjective improvement experienced with this drug.

“…The role of mast cell mediator release in EIA was suggested in 1968 when it was shown that the mast cell stabilizing drug sodium cromoglycate was effective in preventing EIA [61]. Anderson has suggested that stimulus for the mediator release from mast cells during exercise is provided by hypertonicity of airway lining fluid [29].…”

“…For example, disodium cromoglycate (DSCG), a drug which stabilizes mast cell membranes, is effective in blunting exercise-induced asthma [6,7]. Pretreatment with a number of H 1 receptor antagonists has been shown to attenuate EIB [8][9][10]; however, the degree of protection afforded by this class of drugs has been modest.…”

“…Eur Respir J., 1996, 9, 1891-1895. Disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) has been used for treatment of asthma, and for preventing attacks of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) [1][2][3]. It is administered as a powder or in aerosol form by use of different devices for inhalation [4][5][6][7].…”
