Effect of different levels of dietary sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peel extract on humoral immune system responses in broiler chickens

Abstract: This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of different levels of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peel extract (SOPE) on humoral immune system responses in broiler chickens. Three hundred 1-day broilers (Ross-308) were randomly allocated to treatments varying in supplemental SOPE added in the drinking water. The experimental groups consisted of three treatments fed for 42 days as follows: a control treatment without feed extract, a treatment containing 1000 ppm of SOPE and a treatment containing 1250… Show more

“…Plasma was collected and stored at -20 °C until analysis. Humoral immune responses were measured from samples collected on days 16 and 34 for Newcastle disease virus (NDV), on day 30 for avian influenza (AI), and on day 40 for infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and infectious bursal disease (Gumboro) (Pourhossein et al, 2015).…”

“…Antibody titers against IBV and Gumboro were measured with commercial ELISA kits (Bio-check BV, Gouda, Holland) in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The absorbance of ELISA controls and samples was read at 405 nm using a plate reader (Bio-Tek Instruments Inc. ELX 800; Winooski, VT, USA), as described by Pourhossein et al (2015).…”

“…Blood samples were taken from one broiler chicken randomly chosen on day 42 according Citrus sinensis peels and broiler chickens to the same procedure adopted elsewhere (Poorghasemi et al, 2015;Pourhossein et al, 2015). Hemagglutination inhibition test was used to determine vaccine titers of Newcastle disease (ND) and avian influenza (AI).…”

“…According to the method described by Pourhossein et al (2015), sheep red blood cells (SRBC) suspension [5% phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)] was injected into the breast muscle of 48 birds (6 per each group) ageing 21 and 35 days. Blood samples were withdrawn from the brachial vein and serum was collected after centrifugation at 1500× g for 15 min.…”
