Effect of different contraction methods on pelvic floor muscle contraction in middle-aged women

Abstract: Objective: Pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) form the base of the abdomino-pelvic cavity and also the PFMs function is important for urinary continence. PFMs training (PFMT) is considered to be the first method for PFM dysfunction. This study demonstrated correct PFMs contraction among commonly used different contraction methods for PFMT. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: In this study, nineteen middle-aged (40-70 years) women participated. To evaluate PFM function, ultrasonography was used to measure the dist… Show more

“…From the perspective of physiology, the bladder base movement is considered to be the principal mechanism of continence and as an indicator of PFM contractility and strength. Using ultrasonography, Kim et al recently conducted a study of bladder base movements of four different PFM contraction methods in healthy women, including the conventional PFM contraction, an abdominal drawing‐in manoeuvre, anal contractions and hip adductor contractions. Their results showed that the women who applied the conventional PFM contractions had the greatest bladder base movement and the value of which was significantly higher than that of the abdominal drawing‐in manoeuvre.…”

“…Pelvik taban kasları ve abdominal kaslar arasındaki ilişki, artmış üretral basınç durumunda üriner kontinansın sürdürülmesini sağlamaktadır (9). Literatürde abdominal kasların kontraksiyonu ve pelvik taban-la ilişkilendirilen kontraksiyonlar; pelvik taban kas kontraksiyonu, anal kas kontraksiyonu, Hollowing in manevrası ve korseleme manevrası olarak belirtilmiştir (11,12). Hollowing in manevrası Pilates egzersizlerinin, korseleme manevrası ise spinal stabilizasyon egzersizlerinin temelini oluşturmaktadır.…”
