Effect of dietary garlic and onion on liver and tibial mineral concentrations in omega-3 fatty acids rich oil fed rats

Abstract: This study was designed to compare the effect of garlic or onion (2%) on mineral concentrations in liver and tibia of rats fed with diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Experiments were carried out on Male Sprague-Dawley rats fed AIN93 semi-purified diets containing either 8 % flaxseed or olive oils replacing corn oil with or without garlic or onion (2%) for 28 days. The analysis of minerals calcium (Ca), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) of liver and tibia were … Show more

“…Garlic may also protect cells and metabolic tissues (e.g., liver) from chemical damage from peripheral toxins due to its contents in s-allyl-L-cysteine and propyl-cysteine, and also reduce lipid peroxidation through cysteine sulfoxides (Aslani et al, 2016;Dhawan & Jain, 2004;Lanzotti et al, 2006). Furthermore, garlic has proven antimicrobial, antithrombotic, anticarcinogenic, antihypertensive, antiarthritic, and lipid and glucose-lowering properties (El-Sabban et al, 2009;Gorinsteina et al, 2006;Mohamed et al, 2011). Another nutritional supplement that is believed to play an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and oxidative stress is the lemon.…”

“…Its main crucial properties include antimicrobial, antithrombotic, anticancer, immune system modifier, and liver protector. [ 31 32 33 ] This medical plant can stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, it appears that physical activity, along with the consumption of plant foods such as garlic can lead to enhancement of the immune system and reduction of many diseases.…”

“…Garlic has likewise been recommended to have antifungal, antimicrobial, hypoglycaemic, hypolipidaemic, antihypertensive and hepatoprotective properties. [21][22][23] Our review will something in the body of scientific knowledge. Since there is no approved pharmacotherapy to treat NAFLD and constraint of RCTs, it will provide clues for researchers and any stakeholders.…”
