Effect Of Dietary Garcinia Kola Seed On Selected Serum Electrolytes And Trace Metals In Male Albino Rats

Abstract: Summary:The effects of various doses of dietary intake of Garcinia kola seed powder [incorporated in animal feed at levels of 5% w/w, 10% w/w and 20% w/w and fed daily for . These findings point to a possible relationship with already documented histopathology of various organs (such as the gonads) induced by Garcinia kola seed. It is also conjectured that the documented antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, antidiabetic and antifertility effects of Garcinia kola seed may have underlying involvemen… Show more

“…Balance of electrolytes is essential for normal function of cells and organs and electrolyte tests are commonly used to monitor treatment of certain health problems, including high blood pressure (hypertension) (Olaiya et al, 2013). Electrolytes such as chloride, potassium, calcium and sodium also tend to show slight modulations in hypertensive conditions and significant independent relationships have been found to exist between blood pressure and several serum cations (Olaiya et al, 2013;Agada and Braide, 2009). Hypertension is a risk factor of MetS, thus some ions, urea and creatinine levels were measured, in order to ascertain the hypertensive condition of the animals following induction of metabolic syndrome and treatment.…”

“…The mechanism of the protection of the liver against the damaging effects of chronic lead acetate poison by bitter cola is still unclear. However, it may be attributed to the physiochemical processes of chelation and the membrane biochemistry [54,55,43]. The rat groups exposed to lead acetate poison and fed with either the non-supplemented feed or the bitter cola supplemented feed had decreased levels of alkaline phosphatase activity, which was higher in the negative group.…”

“…Hypertensive group when compared to the other groups in Table 2 showed significant decrease in sodium levels in both the standard drug group (Group 3) and methanol Tetracarpidium conophorum Group, unlike in the table 1, there showed a positive response from the groups treated with a known hypertensive drug and the nuts of Tetracarpidium conophorum. Agada and Braide, 2009 [15] noted significant independent relationships in several serum cation and hypertension.…”
