The consumption of nutraceuticals has become progressively popular in improving health, as well as disease treatment and prevention. The aim of this study is to evaluate the ameliorative effect of fermented Pentaclethra macrophylla (African oil bean) seed on high fat diet and sucrose drink induced metabolic syndrome in male New Zealand rabbits. All experimental procedures were carried using standard methods. A total of twenty (20) rabbits were used for this study, the animals were randomly grouped into five (5) groups with four (4) animals each. Metabolic syndrome risk factors obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia were determined. HFD+30%SUC had over 1500g body weight (bwt) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) 239.50±5.74 mg/dl relative to the normal control with 1000±6.73g and 77.00±5.94 respectively whereas ND+30%SUC had lower FBS (l172.50±2.52) compared to HFD+30%SUC. There was a significant p<0.05 increase in body weights in treated groups with 1274±11.19g, 1282.75±4.99g, 1285±4.76g and FBS levels in mg/dL198.25±4.79, 198.75±8.06, 200±3.74 in rabbits compared to untreated HFD+30%SUC. Glycated hemoglobin, and ?-Amylase were significantly p<0.05 elevated, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase levels were significantly p<0.05 reduced, lipid profile markers (HDL, TRIG & CHOL), electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium), urea and creatinine levels were significantly p<0.05 altered in HFD+30%SUC exposed group relative to the normal control and ND+30%SUC. However, dietary supplementation with fermented Pentaclethra macrophylla seeds caused weight, FBS, serum lipid reduction and potentiated electrolyte, urea and creatinine levels. Therefore, according to our results, fermented Pentaclethra macrophylla seed is an excellent nutraceutical and its consumption should be encouraged in modifying high fat and elevated intake of sucrose in rabbit

The in vitro antimicrobial and in vivo heavy metal abatement properties of aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola Heckel (bitter cola) were investigated using opportunistic pathogens and Wistar rats as experimental models. A marked inhibitory activity against Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Candida albicans was recorded at 100 mg/ml of the crude relative to ketoconozole and fluconazole drugs. Similarly, different concentrations (25 mg/ml, 50 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml) of the crude extracts of bitter cola inhibited species of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa almost as effectively as the control drug of streptomycine used. Chronic lead acetate poisoned wistar rats in groups B, C, D, E exposed to G. kola supplemented feed and water ad libitum showed variable decrease in the serum alkaline phosphatase level while aspartate and alanine aminotransferases level reduces in C and D groups compared to the negative control group. The kidney biomarkers; serum creatinine and urea concentrations were not significantly different at P ≤ 0.05 for rat groups C, D, E when compared with the positive and negative control groups respectively. Mild infiltration and cell distortion were observed in the liver and kidney sections of the rats exposed to uncoated bitter cola supplemented feed while suggesting an overriding effect from the nut coats. The study reaffirms the medicinal potential of coated and uncoated bitter cola to act as abatement of lead toxicity and alternative antimicrobial. Furthermore, G. kola could be a double-edged drug for the spontaneous amelioration of lead toxicity and secondary infections due to lead poisoning.

The use of natural plant as food, nutraceuticals consumption, phytotherapy and nutritional therapy has recently become widely used in the treatment of diseases and shown to improve health. The study evaluated the hepatoprotective and cardioprotective effect of some nutraceuticals from phytosterol diet such as Tetracarpidiun conophorom on some parameter as found in albino rats. Cadmium chloride was used for the inducement of hypertension on the albino rats. Each study group was a total number of 10 rats in five different groups made up of the Control Group, Hypertensive Group, Standard group and 2 Test Groups (methanol and n-hexane). Renal function test was done through biochemical analysis, standard methods were used to estimate the serum Urea and Creatinine, Electrolyte and Calcium. Liver function test evaluated was Aspartate Transaminase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Alanine Phosphatase (ALP). Some lipid profile was also evaluated. One way ANOVA was used for analysis of the collected data and was expressed as Mean ± SEM. The result of Hypertensive group showed significant increase in sodium level (p<0.05) when compared with Control group while significant decrease in Sodium level of Standard drug and Walnut group were observed when compared with the hypertensive Control. Tetracarpidium conophorum study groups exhibited significant decrease in Total Protein level, Conjugated Bilirubin level and Total Bilirubin level when compared with the Control, Hypertensive and the Standard groups. The liver and kidney tissues showed histological distorted patchy necrotic areas on the Hypertensive groups while the Negative, Standard and Test groups showed normal histological tissues/cells. This results suggest that Tetracarpidium conophorum possesses renoprotective, cardioprotective and hepatoprotective effect on the Wistar rats which implies that nutraceutical of the Walnut protection against Cadmium chloride induced hypertension in the Wistar rats.
