“…Dietary supplements are incorporated into aquatic feed to help the body systems process and absorb the nutrients they get from the food they ingest ( Dawood et al, 2021 , Zheng et al, 2020 , Alemayehu et al, 2018 ) and to improve fish health ( Shekarabi et al, 2022 ). Exogenous enzymes, amino acids, and effective microbes are just some of the feed additives that can help fish grow ( Kari et al, 2022 , Mohammadi et al, 2022a , Mohammadi et al, 2022b , Kari et al, 2021 , Cerqueira et al, 2020 , Encarnação, 2016 , Castillo and Gatlin, 2015 ).…”

“…From the economical aspect, supplementation of purified berberine may induce more economic costs for feed companies. However, berberine-enriched plant organs, such as Forsythia suspensa extract (Zhang et al, 2013), barberry root (Ramezanzadeh et al, 2020;Ramezanzadeh et al, 2021), barberry fruit (Shekarabi et al, 2022), fibrous root of Rhizoma Coptidis (Zhou et al, 2016), also showed considerable beneficial effects for animals and can be an economical choice.…”

“…Fish skin mucus serves as a primary physical defense against various pathogens. A recent study showed that feeding Siberian sturgeon ( Acipenser baerii ) with barbery fruit extract for 56 days caused a remarkable improvement in the skin mucus bactericidal activity against A. hydrophila , where the bacterial inhibition zone diameter is higher compared to the fish fed with unsupplemented diet (control group) ( 87 ). Another phytobiotics mechanism is through immune cells improvement and macrophages activation, as reported by Chen et al ( 88 ), where Salvia miltiorrhiza polysaccharide exhibited the ability to modulate the disease resistance of sturgeon against A. hydrophila infection.…”
