Effect of diet on the fatty acid pattern of milk from dairy cows

Abstract: -Twelve dairy cows 130 days in milk were sorted by milk production and body weight and assigned to three feeding regimens in a 3 × 3 Latin-square design, in order to study the effects of diet on milk fatty acid (FA) composition. The cows were fed a total mixed ration (TMR) consisting of corn silage (60%) and concentrate (40%) on dry matter basis, or grazed pasture, without (P) or with 5 kg·d -1 concentrate as a supplement (SP). Supplemented grazing dairy cows produced significantly more milk than the cows on t… Show more

“…Furthermore, the temperate Atlantic climate in the Azores Islands allows milk production, which is heavily based on grazing, almost all year round [45]. It has long been described that the milk fat produced from the pasture is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, including trans-octadecenoic acids and conjugated isomers of linoleic acid [45] and [46].…”

“…It has long been described that the milk fat produced from the pasture is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, including trans-octadecenoic acids and conjugated isomers of linoleic acid [45] and [46]. The conjugated isomers of linoleic acid has been associated with improving dyslipidemia and the proinflammatory state related to obesity and the MetS [47], [48] and [49].…”

Ellis i wsp.…”

“…In a recent study, Rego et al [12] compared the profiles of FA in milk fat of cows fed pasture with cows fed a mixture of maize silage and concentrate and observed that the milk produced in pasture was substantially lower in medium and short chain saturated FA and richer in long chain unsaturated FA, CLA, TVA and omega n-3. The enrichment of ruminant products with CLA is currently achieved by increasing the supply of linoleic and linolenic acids in reticulorumen metabolism.…”
