Effect of Dexmedetomidine in children undergoing general anaesthesia with sevoflurane: a meta-analysis and systematic review

Abstract: Objective The sedative effects of dexmedetomidine (Dex) are similar to natural sleep, with easy wakening following Dex administration, and Dex has minor effects on breathing, reducing emergence agitation in children. The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the effects of Dex on recovery quality in children following general anaesthesia with sevoflurane, to aid clinical decision making. Methods Relevant randomized controlled trials published before August 2019 were searched and selected from databa… Show more

“…The analysis for PONV showed that patients who received DEX were associated with a lower incidence of PONV than placebo. The results strengthened the findings of earlier meta-analyses (10)(11)(12). The TSA results showed that the current sample size exceeded the required IS, and the present evidence for anticipated intervention effects was sufficient.…”

“…The preventive effect of DEX on EA in children has been documented in several meta-analyses (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13). Although four relevant meta-analyses (7-10) published during 2014-2015 seemed to confirm the superiority of DEX on EA in children, the limited number of included studies reduced the reliability of outcomes.…”

“…Our findings also demonstrate that dexmedetomidine minimizes PONV and the need for rescue analgesia without delaying discharge from the PACU. These findings are consistent with those of earlier meta-analyses [ 33 34 35 ].…”

“…Articles have shown that sevoflurane can increase the incidence of emergence agitation in children when compared with propofol ( 10 ). In addition, meta-analysis showed that the incidence of restlessness in the wake-up period of sevoflurane anesthesia was lower than that of halothane ( 11 ). To date, the etiology of emergence agitation is still unclear.…”
