Effect of Dentin Pretreatment with Arginine on Microshear Bond Strength of Etch-and-Rinse or Self-Etch Adhesive Systems

Abstract: Objective The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dentin pretreatment with 8% arginine on the immediate and 6-month bond strength (BS) of adhesive systems and surface morphology of dentin. Materials and Methods Dentin bovine specimens (5 × 5 mm) were allocated into following pretreatments: without pretreatment (conventional technique, C) or exposure to arginine solution (A) for 5 minutes prior to tooth restoration. The adhesive procedure was performed using (n = 12): 3-step etch-… Show more

“…Recently new products have been recommended for their desensitizing effect. The results of several topical desensitizing medications, however, have reportedly been transitory because they do not attach to the dentin surface (10). Studies have revealed that although the first therapy of choice is to apply desensitizer solutions and dentifrices containing ferric aluminium and potassium oxalates, their effects are transient.…”

“…Gabriela et al reported that arginine dentine pretreatment had positive effect on adhesion especially with self-etch adhesive system. 16 From the reported studies, it was observed that eroded dentin exhibited lower bond strength compared with sound dentin, but this might also be affected by the age factor. A clinical based study conducted by Federlin et al has showed that class V restorations bonded to the unprepared surface of eroded dentin for a period of 12 months, displayed good retention regardless of the type of restoration.…”

“…Human enamel and dentin tissues present clear differences regarding their micromorphology and the balance of organic and inorganic contents, which consequently result in different performance of adhesive systems onto such tissues. 1,2 The interface between the resin composite and the cavity walls is the most critical region in bonded restorations. Unprotected collagen depleted fibrils 3 and chemical hydrolysis of the ester bonds are considered the main reasons for hybrid layer degradation.…”
