Flotation constitutes a separation process that originated from mineral processing. Nowadays, wider applications have been found and compared to flotation for water and wastewater treatment. Stress in the present review paper was mainly applied to heavy metal ions recovery by flotation and the respective mechanism followed, being either ion, precipitate, or sorptive flotation. In the latter case, the use of adsorbents is included (such as powdered activated carbon, zeolites, and goethite), as well as various biosorbents. The flotation of the following metals was reviewed: copper, zinc, nickel, lead, iron, chromium, arsenic, gold, and others. The bubble generation method could be applied for typical dispersed-air flotation column, electroflotation, or dissolved-air flotation; the latter being the most appropriate established technique in water treatment. The role of particle size (for example, studying flotation of salt-type mineral fines) was also examined.

Air diffusers or spargers have since been used in separation processes that include conventional wastewater treatment. Over the years, there has been advancements in diffuser design in terms of shape, pore size, orientation and materials of construction as a way of mitigating challenges such as fouling, clogging, energy consumption and poor system efficiency. Some of the available air diffusers are inadequate to solve most of these challenges due to reduced quality and increased quantity of wastewater being treated. Additionally, there is a paucity of information regarding air diffuser design and their effect on operational parameters in wastewater treatment. This review seeks to address the advancement in diffuser design and also the effects of design factors including parameters of air diffusers with a focus of their use in a column flotation system for wastewater treatment.

Water covers a large area of the earth that reaches about three quarters of the surface of this planet, but we cannot say that all of this water is fresh or drinkable; according to many statistics, the percentage of fresh water reaches about 1% of the total water on earth. But with the great need for fresh water, whether for drinking or other purposes such as agriculture, the search for water treatment methods has become much larger. One of the most important of these methods that have been developed is desalination of seawater using desalination plants; therefore, we will address here the most important methods used in desalination and water treatment.
