Effect of cyclobutane carbonitrile rings on the glass transition temperature of vinyl copolymers

Abstract: A wide compositional range of copolymers of 1‐cyclobutene carbonitrile (CBCN) and 1‐bicyclobutance carbonitrile (BBCN) with common vinyl monomers was prepared in order to study systematically the effect of cyclobutane carbonitrile ring incorporation on the glass transition temperature (Tg). In general, the Tg's of the copolymers are increased in proportion to the weight percent of the small‐ring monomer incorporated, but the 1,2‐mode of incorporation raises Tg more than the 1,3‐mode. Attempts were made to corr… Show more

“…The copolymerization of these monomers with common vinyl ones was also studied to increase the T g values of the resulting materials. 106 Hall, Jr. and co-workers 107 extended this work to ATRP and thus succeeded to prepare a well-defined polymer with cyclobutane ring units in the backbone by controlled/living radical ring-opening polymerization.…”

“…4,5 However, polymethacrylates with keto side chains are readily transformed into other derivatives and have some photosensitive properties. 6,7 There are many reports concerning polymers with a cyclobutane ring [8][9][10][11] and a cyclobutane ring and hydroxy and keto ethyl groups together. [12][13][14] Reactivity ratios are among the most important parameters for composition equations of copolymers and can offer information about the relative reactivity of monomer pairs and be used to estimate the copolymer composition.…”

“…The synthesis of polymers containing monomeric or functional groups of different structures is of a special interest. There are many reports concerning polymers with cyclobutane rings such as poly(1-cyanobicyclobutane) [1][2][3], poly(alkyl-1-bicyclobutanecarboxylate) [4][5][6], poly(3-methylcyclobutane) [7]. On the other hand, polymers containing the cyclobutane ring, which is a small, strained carbon ring, are generally decomposed by irradiation with deep ultraviolet light [8,9].…”
