Effect of COVID-19 on Musculoskeletal Performance in Gait and the Timed-Up and Go Test

Abstract: Introduction: The total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection is over 621 million in the world. In approximately 63% of cases, the patient still experiences persistent symptoms 30 days after the onset of symptoms or hospitalisation, and 45.9% of patients have experienced or will experience symptoms for at least three months. Despite the prevalence of chronic symptoms and pathological changes that may affect gait and functional mobility in people with a history of COVID-… Show more

“…This method primarily focuses on single-joint measurements, which may not fully represent the complex and multi-joint actions required in daily activities. Acknowledging this, our research also incorporated functional assessments such as gait analysis and the Timed Up and Go test [ 50 ]. These assessments provide a more holistic understanding of the patient’s functional status and their ability to perform daily activities.…”

“…It was observed that patients with up to 5 months since the acute phase of COVID-19 exhibited timed up and go test durations longer than those of individuals without the disease. Kinematic parameters such as walking speed and walking cadence were lower in patients with respect to the control group ( 13 ).…”

“…We developed an algorithm written in Python language based on previous studies ( 13 , 44 ) to find transient components of the inertial waveforms. In the present approach, we focused on analyzing the norm vector of each inertial sensor.…”
