Effect of Cordyceps Sinensis on Uncoupling Protein 2 in Experimental Rats with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver

Abstract: [Objective] To investigate the effect of cordyceps sinensis (CS) on expression of uncoupling protein-2 (UCP2) and so to elucidate the role of UCP2 in development of nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (NAFLD).[Methods] Rats were administrated with high-fat diet to produce NAFLD animal model and intervened by cordyceps sinensis. Triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) in liver were measured by biochemistry, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by luciferin-luciferinase, and UCP2 expression by Northern blotting and immu… Show more

“…13 One study evaluated ATP levels and mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) expression in the liver of rats fed a HFD for up to 20 weeks. In this model, supplementation with O. sinensis 73 prevented ATP depletion and kept UCP2 levels elevated in comparison with control animals (Figure 2). Isolated polysaccharides from G. lucidum (GLP) inhibited mitochondrial-related apoptosis in HFD-fed mice splenic lymphocytes, demonstrated by a decrease in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and suppression of caspase-3 activation.…”

“…On the other hand, OS supplementation on HFDfed rats can enhance the protein expression of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP-2), further increasing energy expenditure in electronic transport chain, and then attenuate the steatosis [42]. The UCP-2 was considered as an important therapeutic target in NAFLD [43], and many pharmacological researches had focused on related mechanisms to restore the lipid homeostasis [27,42,43,44]. Overall, the OSM or its metabolites may modulate the whole body lipid regulation.…”
