Effect of connection rerouting on application performance in mobile networks

Abstract: The increasing deployment of wireless access technology, along with the emergence of high speed integrated service networks, such as ATM, promises to provide mobile users with ubiquitous access to multimedia information in the near future. One of the key problems in building connection-oriented ATM networks that support host mobility is designing mechanisms for rerouting virtual circuits to maintain data flow to and from mobile hosts. Ideally, VC rerouting must be done fast enough so as to cause minimal disrup… Show more

“…They are the functions that are responsible for enabling the mobile UE to switch connections from one cell to another during movement without any disruption in the ideal case. Several mobility functions are present, such as the mobile Internet Protocol (IP), handover decision, handover optimization functions [40][41][42], and rerouting mobile protocols [43][44][45]. Some wireless networks support these functions, while others do not.…”

“…In this network structure, base stations are ATM switches equipped with one wireless radio port adapter card and act as gateways for communication between a mobile station and the wired ATM network. The geographical area for which a base station radio port acts as the gateway is called its cell [10], and one base station covers one cell. Nineteen cells are connected to a cluster switch that manages intracluster handoffs.…”
