Effect of Condoms on Reducing the Transmission of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 From Men to Women

Abstract: Condom use offers significant protection against HSV-2 infection in susceptible women. Changes in sexual behavior, correlated with counseling about avoiding sex when a partner has lesions, were associated with reduction in HSV-2 acquisition over time. These data suggest that identification of discordant couples can reduce transmission of HSV-2, especially for heterosexual couples in which the male partner has HSV-2 infection.

“…3 4 6-9 Thus, in an effort to reduce the risk of HSV-2 transmission, it is necessary to understand current sexual behaviour during asymptomatic and symptomatic periods. Reduced sexual activity has been associated with reduced HSV-2 acquisition rates 10 ; however, there are few data describing the factors associated with engaging in sexual activity during symptomatic periods. The objective of this study was to describe differences in sexual behaviour and condom use during asymptomatic and symptomatic periods of GH, and also to determine factors associated with engaging in sex during symptomatic periods in an effort to inform education initiatives.…”

“…HSV-1 and -2 are ubiquitous pathogens, and hence, susceptibility to infection was believed to be common, if not universal, in all populations. In prospective studies of couples discordant for HSV-2 where the HSV-seronegative partner was consistently exposed to infectious secretions, the acquisition rate of HSV-1 and HSV-2 averaged Ͻ7% yearly (1)(2)(3), suggesting that resistance to HSV infection may be acquired by persons with chronic exposure to the virus. Acquired resistance to a human herpesvirus has not been documented; however, there are precedents for acquired resistance in other human viral infections.…”

“…Latex condoms are lexible, broadly available, and least expensive among all types of condoms. They are exceedingly efective in preventing the sexual transmission of plethora of STIs, including HPV, HIV-1, and HSV-2 [56][57][58]. The failure of latex condoms to safeguard STIs or unintended pregnancy is usually due to inconsistent or incorrect use [59].…”

“…The LR-HPVs such as subtypes 6,11,42,44,51,53, and 83 induce warts or hyperproliferative benign lesion on genital. On the other hand, HR-HPV subtypes including 16,18,31,33,35,39,45,51,52,56,58,59,68,73, and 82 are linked with premalignant and malignant cervical, penile, vulvar, vaginal, anal, and head and neck carcinomas [10]. Notably, majority of the LR-HPV infections are caused by HPV 6 and 11 subtypes, while subtypes 16 and 18 are responsible for most of the HR-HPV infections [11,12].…”
