Effect of Concentration and Duration of Osmopriming on Germination and Vigor of Aged Seed of Chickpea

Abstract: To standardize the best concentration and duration of osmopriming of aged seed of chickpea variety, NBeG-3 with Polyethylene Glycol, an experiment was conducted in Factorial Completely Randomized Design with four replications. The seed was subjected to osmopriming with different concentrations of PEG 6000 viz., 0, -0.5, -1.0, -1.5 and -2.0 MPa for various durations viz., 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 hours. The seed quality was assessed by testing for germination in between paper method and sand method. In both the metho… Show more

“…Seed priming play an important role to raise the amylase activity and total soluble sugar contents under drought and normal conditions, resulting in excellent germination and more rapid growth as compared with control (Zheng et al, 2015). The study results are in line with the investigations of Varshini et al (2018) who documented that induced drought stress decreases the seedling length as compared with control. In the recent research, gradual increase in root/shoot ratio was recorded as the concentration of stress conditions enhanced.…”

“…The seedling vigor was calculated by using the germination and seedling length traits, which explains why this character displayed a similar variation trend noted in both these characters. The outcomes of the research study are in concord with the findings of Varshini et al (2018), who explained that the seedling vigor index decreases with an increased level of PEG osmotic potential.…”

“…Maximum seed vigor index I was obtained on seeds primed with PEG 10% but decreased when the concentration was increased. A similar effect of PEG concentration was observed in (Varshini et al, 2018).…”

“…Priming with methyl cellulose enhances ion transportation, increases strength of cell wall there by reducing the impact of fungal pathogens, enhances metabolic rates and maintains proper hormonal balances and there by an ultimate raise in seed yield. Effect of polyvinyl glycol has been successfully demonstrated to improve germination and field emergence in seeds of many crops, particularly seeds of vegetables and small seeded grasses; many researchers suggests that under diverse environmental stresses such as salinity, water deficiency and high and low temperatures polyvinyl glycol leads to cellular, sub-cellular and molecular changes in seeds and subsequently promotes seed vigour during germination and emergence [8].…”
