Effect of composition and ageing of chloride solutions on extraction of Rh(III) and Ru(III) with phosphonium ionic liquids Cyphos IL 101 and IL 104

BACKGROUND Recycling of spent platinum group metals (PGMs) has attracted much attention in order to overcome the problems associated with the low natural abundance of these resources. To recycle such metals, efficient hydrometallurgical processes are required. To improve the efficiency of these processes, we have designed a new phosphonium‐based ionic liquid as an extraction solvent. This paper reports on the potential use of the ionic liquid for extraction and separation of PGMs, namely Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Rh(III). RESULTS An ionic liquid, trioctyl(dodecyl)phosphonium chloride, P88812Cl, which was newly synthesized, showed highly efficient extraction for Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Rh(III). P88812Cl features several advantages as an extraction solvent, such as high hydrophobicity and low viscosity compared with those features of a commercial analogue, trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride (P66614Cl). The favorable features of our novel ionic liquid were reflected by its high extraction efficiency and low release of phosphorus from the ionic liquid into the aqueous feed solution. Stripping operations were possible, and the high reusability of the ionic liquid was confirmed. CONCLUSION The novel ionic liquid P88812Cl is potentially useful as an extraction solvent for PGMs. Results highlight the strengths of ionic liquids and the tuneability of their properties through design of their molecular structure. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

The wide application range and ascending demand for platinum group metals combined with the progressive depletion of their natural resources renders their efficient recycling a very important and pressing matter. Primarily environmental considerations associated with state‐of‐the‐art recovery processes have shifted the focus of the scientific community toward the investigation of alternative recycling approaches. Within this context, ionic liquids have gained considerable attention in the last two decades chiefly sparked by properties such as tunabilty, low‐volatility, and relatively easy recyclability. In this review an understanding of the state‐of‐the‐art processes, including their drawbacks and limitations, is provided. The core of the discussion is focused on platinum group metal recovery with ionic liquid‐based systems. A brief insight in some environmental considerations related to ionic liquids is also provided while some discussion on research gaps, common misconceptions related to ionic liquids and outlook on unresolved issues could not be absent from this review.

The advantageous properties of ionic liquids (ILs) have put them in the spotlight in recent years as durable and environmentally friendly solvents compared with conventional organic solvents. The applications of ILs have been expanding in various fields, including extraction and separation of metals. Platinum group metals (PGMs) are attractive targets for recovery using IL systems. In recent years, ILs have shown excellent performance for PGM extraction. In this review, we focus on the recent progress in solvent extraction using ILs for PGM recovery. Although application of ILs in PGM recovery is still in the early stages, research and development of ILs in this area are steadily advancing owing to the unique properties of ILs, such as their non-volatility, inflammability, low toxicity, and tunability. Fundamental approaches are expected to realize industrial applications of ILs in the future.
