Effect of complete dentures on oral stereognostic ability in edentulous patients: A systematic review

Abstract: Aim: Oral stereognosis is an important sensation for a human being to percept any type of materials that are introduced in the oral cavity. It is defined as the ability of an individual to recognize objects using only tactile sensation without using vision, audition, balance, somatic function, taste, or smell. The primary purpose of this review was to evaluate the effect of complete dentures on oral stereognostic ability in edentulous subjects. Settings and Design: Syst… Show more

“…Studies have shown that use of complete denture, however can improve this ability to some extent. 8 This increase in stereognostic proficiency is attributed to the increased ability of individuals to manipulate the objects due to presence of well-fitting upper and lower complete dentures. 9 In a study conducted by Meenakshi, oral stereognostic proficiency scores were calculated 30 minutes and 1 month after complete denture insertion.…”

“…10 Moreover, Oral stereognosis ability has investigated denture adaptation in several studies, which may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between oral stereognosis ability and natural denture adaptation in the senior population. 15 Meenakshi S and colleagues reported that experienced denture wearers took less time to identify objects than those without experience. 4 Another study found no statistically signicant dierence in the scores of oral stereognosis tests among subjects with previous denture experience and those with no previous denture experience.…”

“…Many studies have also reported mixed results for oral stereognosis and denture satisfaction concerning complete dentures. 4,10,15,16 Assessment of stereognosis in edentulous individuals who require complete denture rehabilitation will help us determine the useful information about the sensory perception of these patients and thus aid in predicting prosthesis satisfaction. It will help practitioners improve their skills, beneting our patients.…”
