“…The longitudinal study of Krell‐Roesch et al corroborates this hypothesis finding that subjects involved in mentally stimulating activities even in late life had a lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (Krell‐Roesch et al, ). Although the mechanisms underlying this association remain still unclear, some authors observed that cognitively demanding activities were linked to diminished or slower deposition of β‐amyloid in the cortex (Marks et al, ), reduced rate of hippocampal atrophy (Valenzuela et al, ), and decreased age‐related alterations in cerebrospinal biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (Almeida et al, ).
