“…Several studies found IOP changes to be negligible, [25][26][27][28][29][30] whereas others report increases of approximately 1-4 mm Hg. [31][32][33][34][35][36] A recent meta-analysis 37 called for more high-quality randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to better assess caffeine's effects on IOP in those with or at risk for glaucoma and in older subjects. Most RCTs investigating caffeine intake and IOP have examined healthy subjects 25,28,29,33,34 with a mean age of 25 years.…”

“…Most RCTs investigating caffeine intake and IOP have examined healthy subjects 25,28,29,33,34 with a mean age of 25 years. 37 Only two RCTs 31,32 have enrolled glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients, and neither disclosed the subjects' ages. Furthermore, neither trial 31,32 was participant-masked, and one study 31 was not investigator-masked.…”

“…Among documented clinical effects of caffeine are increased heart rate, systolic blood pressure and left ventricular output [7,8,11] stimulation of autonomic responses [12,13] decreased tone of the gastrointestinal smooth muscles increased ocular pressure in glaucoma patients [14] central nervous system excitation and increased alertness [2,5,9] However, the only study we were able to find documenting the response of salivation to ingestion of any methylxanthine was a retrospective analysis of Pavlovian date [15]. Nevertheless, in the dental community, the belief that caffeine consumption decreases salivary production is widely held [6].…”

“…Since contact lens wear can affect the corneal surface, thickness and curvature (Liu & Pflugfelder, 2000), contact lens wearing subjects (n = 2) were instructed to discontinue contact lens use on the day of measurement. Caffeine intake has been shown to increase IOP (Avisar et al, 2002) and alcohol consumption has been shown to lower IOP (Houle & Grant, 1967). Since IOP can influence axial length measurements, all participants were instructed to avoid caffeine and alcohol from the evening before and on the measurement day.…”
